A friend has invited me round to his house tonight to play his 1978 1987 head.

It's totally mint, just serviced and he's looking around £600 for it. ($900)

I may be able to get it for less...

What do you guys think at that price?

Btw he runs a 12AT7 in V1 says it increase headroom.
Anyone else heard of this?

I run different pre amp tubes in different positions to change the tone. IMO -A 12AT7 is a terrible sounding tube in the V1 position but it does increase head room, but so will a 5751 and it sounds better. Myles Rose states this too in his reports at index2. He wrote......

"Many folks think that when they want to have their amp have more clean headroom they can insert a 12AT7 in place of the 12AX7. Very true. (By the way, the 12AT7 in a first gain stage is an awful tone generator in a guitar amp. If you want to drop front end gain use a 5751 (gain of 60-70) or a 12AY7 (gain of 40). The 12AY7 was the first gain stage in the classic Fender Tweed Bassman, Deluxe, etc."

If you want to increase headroom and have good tone, use a 5751 pre amp tube (ala Stevie Ray) not a 12AT7. The 5751 only has 70% of the gain and will have better tone, touch and feel. In my Voodoo V-rock 50 watt, I use a JAN 5751 in V1 and it sounds killer..... Tames down the amp a little yet still has enough gain.

Of course, everything affects the value to some degree. You'll have to be the judge as to how much. Stock circuits are becoming harder and harder to find...

I think at that money it still sounds good. Before him the guy who bought it bought it new.

Plus 1978 is the year I was born.

That's pretty cool. :dude:

If I go in with my bank card it means I have to go to the cash machine and think.

What great condition! Nice score. I hope you put a 12ax7 in V1. Who needs clean headroom on a plexi????

Just rehearsed with it this afternoon.
Had it set at vol 8 on the high input channel 1. Bass 10, Mid 7.5 and Trebble 5. Pres on 4.

Was getting great Winterland Clapton tones with my New SG.

Was thinking the speakers were sounding a little compressed though. I would like some speakers with more openness to them.

We park our cars in the same garage my friend...:h5:

I too used to own a 1974x and regret selling it. I also owned a Sovtek Mig and regret selling it also.

We both own 2203's and enjoy forums... Beef Jerky. :dude:
