We have had a 2203X for @ 20 years with the Studio series now approaching/hitting the 5 year mark. 2 decades of X/Modern-take 800 single channels and not a 2204 in sight throughout, despite a hungry demand from some vocal proponents of its returm.
Does Marshall even make a current issue 50w (flagship/MiUK) amplifier aside from the 1987X? Within the spectrum of wattages, I don’t recall if DSLs include a current 50w amidst the spectrum of wattages, and the only amp I know for certain of is the asian Origin 50.
It seems like parts/tooling isn’t happening for 50s in general these days in Bletchley aside from the 1987X. On top of that it seems that the demand for a lower headroom 800 has been soaked with an even more portable package that (maybe?) does the 2204 thing faster at smaller wattages.
My guess is an overlapping market for 2203X on one side and SC20 on the other has pushed the “2204 and only 2204” fringe fans further into the margins, and tooling up/sourcing proper 50W components is a more expensive/less worthwhile proposition considering the amount of units they could expect to sell for (at least) the same price as the 2203X. 2025 marks the 50th anniversary of the JMP MV amps (2026 for the 2204) and I could see a possibility of a limited run for this (whatever other) special event, but with the circumstances outlined above, I feel like the 2204X is toast.
What do you think?
