hej everyone, not sure if this question makes sense, but I will give it a try:

I am rocking a SC20H + SC212 for a while now, I mostly use it for home. Yesterday I was in a new rehearsal room and got to try a JCM800 4211 50w 2x12 Combo - and I was so impressed. It was running so soft and smooth crunchy already in low volumes, it sounded much richer and warmer than my 20w head - I forgot to check out the speakers built in. he volumes were much more nuanced.
So my question - is there really such a huge huge difference between those two or does it make no sense to compare these two in the firs place? any other input?

anyway, what a pity they don't make them anymore - any similar recommendations?

best of thanks already

The one in the photo is a split channel 800 4212. It has some diodes in the circuit that helps clipping the amp. Some like that -some does not. I like the split channels - easy to dial in at usable at all volumes.
Should be fairly easy to find one at a decent price as these are not the most sought after.
They were made in several issues: 2205 (50 watt head), 2210 (100 watt head), 4211 (100 watt 2x12 combo), 4210 (1x12 50 watt combo combo), 4212 - the one you have tried 2x12 50 watter..
I have a 2210 now and in the 80's I gigged with a 4211.

hej, thanks for the reply! I am sorry, I thought its a 4211 - thanks for clearing that up :)
so the split channels are the reason it ran so smooth at low volume?

It is another construction. The preamp is different. And higher wattage as mentioned. The amp was designed to compete with the high gain amps that evolved in that era so Marshall introduced the diode clipping circuit. These amps changed a bit during the tenure and got gainer at the end.

Did you try to pick it up? It probably doesn't get moved much from place to place, lol...

Personally I would stick with a head and 212 cab vs 212 combo.

you played the 50 watt version of the 2205 with 2 x12 combo. I had the 4211 which is the 100 watt version of the 2210. a fire breathing dragon.
the small lunch box amps are a mere toy compared to the 50 and 100 Watters.
you prolly noticed the volume sensitivity went from .5 to fury in a small turn.
you can find them used. goo dluck in your quest
btw- the first channel is my favorite on that amp and that crunch by diming the channel volume is sweet

If its still available you might want to try plugging the combo speakers into your SC head. Might just be that you prefer whatever speakers are in the combo. Just make sure the ohms are correct before you do it.

3 things...
1. Yes, there is a noticeable difference between the 20w and 50w Marshalls in general.
2. They are different amps, so aside from the power sections, there are also other factors in play (preamp diode clipping...).
3. As already mentioned, a more direct comparison would be the SC20 through the combo speakers/cab.

They still make this, its close.
No, OP already has an SC20. 20 watt version of that.
He is referring to a split channel 800 with the diode clipping so not that close, no.
