Did some trading today.

I traded my near mint condition ‘70 Marshall 1986 Bass and another guitar for a Gibson Les Paul R8 and this ‘76 JMP 2024.

Just home, it needs a little detailing and a trip to my Amp Tech.

My first Marshall was a (‘76 or ‘77) JMP 2204 so hopefully this amp will sound as good as my first Marshall.

This was the first year for a 2204. Looks pretty clean!

I’m not
I did the two cord test and i believe that it’s been modded to have cascading gain.

Thinking of having my tech put it back to stock, maybe.
I’m no amp tech or historian, but I was always told that the 2204 always had cascading gain from the beginning ( ‘76) and it’s the 2203 that didn’t have it at first and was changed to include it.

Like I said, just what I was told..

Great amp either way and a hell of a trade on your part!

First, CONGRATS on the amazing trade you made! Did you use a gun??? LOL

Can't imagine you wanting to put that circuit back to stock. My 2204 (early '77) was a non-cascaded circuit, and changing it to the later circuit turned it into a GREAT sounding Marshall. Prior to that change, it was not great at all. There's a good reason why they changed the circuit to match the 2203...

Actually, it is just the opposite. The 2203 had the cascaded circuit from the beginning, the 2204 did not. As stated above, I had a stock 2204 with the original non-cascaded circuit.

My understanding also.

Apparently, my first Marshall 2204, was a ‘77 and not a ‘76 (wish I could find a photo of it). I recall attempting some Zeppelin with it, and it would overdrive with the band.

Back then, I didn’t know what an OD pedal was, or at least, I never owned or used one.

Thanks all. I plan to peek inside of it tomorrow and it will be going to my tech later this week.
Not sure if you saw this but it seems like its worth exploring..

If its a 1976 its not cascaded....
I thought about this & looked to see if anyone would post about this anomaly.

I hope your tech can help you out to cascade the gain if it is like most 1976 2204’s I’ve seen. I own three from 1976, but only one was a 2204. It is now a high gain articulate amp.

An R8 is a great axe. A little large in the neck but certainly playable. I likely would have kept the 1970 50 watt Bass head.

Though I have been modifying amps for the last fifteen years I really dig my 200 way 1968 Plexi into a Boss Waza Tube Amp Expander reactive load.

I run the guitar into a Boss GE-10, into the amp, then speaker out to the Waza with a Alesis Quadraverb in it loop then to one of my cabs.

I love it. There is only one way to get “That” tone.

Here is a short video of my 68 at 123 VAC wall voltage.

Congrats, that looks to be a very nice Amp. And you got a new R8, too. Having your Tech look at it is understandable considering it's age, but that one looks to be in a great condition.,
Enjoy!
