I was watching "that metal show" the other night, and the guest guitairist ( the dude that play some licks before a commercial ) was the mighty Michael Schenker.

He was playing one and it sounded typically awesome.

Back in the 80's before I knew what a diode was I chose the 2205/2210. I loved the clarity and gain. Not to mention on board reverb, split channel and effects loop at the time. IMO really was one of the first hot rod amps.

Do you guys agree with the "internet sentiment" that the 2205s and 2210s from the early 80s have less gain and a different tone from the later-80s models?

I for one have never had the bleed issue and my old 2205 (think it was a 1985) kicked ass. I would need to stack them next to each other and compare.

My 1989' 2210 is becoming my favorite Marshall head. I love the saturation and smooth gain. At low volumes and cranked, it really delivers. Here is a YouTube video I did at low volumes of an old Satriani favorite:

The early circuit is a little more open sounding. Less gain but not a huge difference. I think probably the biggest contributing factor is the PPIMV in the early circuit. It is less touchy than the later. The only drawback is that it makes the loop a little harder to get along with the last pedal in the loop becomes the master volume that is the pedals level pot. I just use another head along with my 82 that has a decent loop and leave the 2205 dry. In this manner it is a formidable weapon that kicks plenty of ass. In this video the 2205 on top providing most of the saturation. The DR is set just slightly dirty with an RV5 and a dd7 in the loop. Forgive the bad playing I had been enjoying a few beers while I was dialing the tones. I thought it really reflected a nice attempt at some late seventies Neal Schon tone. Dont pay attention to the attenuators they are bypassed and were sold soon after I made this video. The volume was barely above conversation level.

The frozen hell called Canada !
Sorry , i don't have any pics to post , but used to have a 1987 2210 , it was a killer head , easily one of my fav amps of all time !!! I had so many compliments from other player's and the general public .... hard to ignore how many great Rock records were made with the 2210 .... It was rumored that Ritchie Sambora recorded the whole Slippery When Wet record with a 2210 & a Boss SD1 !! The list of bands from that era that used Marshall amps was staggering .....

The videos and sound clips posted in this thread are better than I could do. Not a whole lot of sense posting more pics that look exactly like everyone else's. I do have some thoughts to add though... I'm well past the honeymoon phase and I still absolutely love my 2205. Somewhere along the line somebody inflicted a lot of damage to it's internals. Most have been corrected but one or two continue to linger and will be receiving attention soon. The loop after the master volume was a mistake in my opinion. Easy to work around, but I'd prefer it not be that way. Even though it's the later circuit, there's a definite channel bleedover issue. Probably due to the PO's handywork. Having said all that... this amp still rocks my world.
