What speakers in MF400/280 cabs?

I've tried to find some info on what kind of speakers there is in a Marshall MF400/MF280 cab, but all I find is that it is "customized".. they say that this cab has a open sound, but can i get that middletone rich "Umph" out of them, normally i use V30 speakers?

The MF400 should have the Celestion G12K-100 speakers and the MF280 has the Marshallized Celestion V30's.

I had 4 of them in my 1982 cab but liked the G12-75's more, and I like the V30's more than the 75's...
IMO the G12K-100 sound a bit to sterile, but that's only my opinion.
I had them in a regular sized 1960 cab, so maybe in a oversized they sound better.

If you have the ability to A/B them, go for it

do you guys know how many ohms the speakers in the MF400 cabs are? they dont say on them, they are G12K-100's. it is an 80hm mono cab, so i just wanna know. i am thinking about rewiring it

Sounds like the speakers are 8 ohms wired in series parallel (or parallel series) for a total of 8 ohms. Most SS amps put out max power into 4 ohms, so a MF400 full stack would be 4 ohms.

You wouldn't be able to rewire it as four, 8 ohms speakers in series would be 32 ohms and in parallel they would be 2 ohms.

thanks for the info marty. it is one kick ass cab. do you know why solid state amps put out more at lower loads? i don't play SS, but i wonder about it

SS amps do not use an output transformer. The load is stabilized off of the output transistors. Generally, the manufacturer will list what the output is into the lowest impedance. Most SS is 4 ohms. Some will go into 2 ohms, but that is mostly car audio.

G12K 100's kick balls for loud and low tuned for clarity. if you like speaker breakup though you won't get it from these. I like clarity from mine so i'm always a v30 or 75 guy where celestions go for hi gain but, for clean and medium gain greenies and blue's are kick balls.
