Loud, fat with decent cleans and great crunch when pushed.

Great basis for pedals but to get the best from it you need to crank the treble, mids and volume 1 (usual guitar input) to 8.

It's an extremely clean amp with low preamp distortion.
Almost like a super lead. There is almost no difference between the two.

These type amps only distort when the output tubes overdrive.

So either use it with effects pedals or,
use an attenuator to crank it all the way up.

thanks guys. sounds like i would prefer a more plexi based circuit.

those vintage moderns are getting good reviews. I was wanting to buy a more "vintage" amp but the high cost is hard to justify if I can at least get the tone in a much lower costing amp.

A '70 Superbass is a plexi circuit, same as the 66-67 Superleads. I think it is the volume that you will find overwhelming if you are not used to it. An attenuator is essential to get the best from these.

The sound will be almost identical to an early Plexi Super Lead
if you turn up the volume to 6 or more.

The tone on my '71 Super Bass is warmer with a smoother overdrive than my '72 Super Lead. You can't go wrong with an early Super Bass or Super Lead. The tone is simply amazing.

I got one yesterday (it is an amp that has been heavily gigged and used on tours for years) after I serviced it, it became a great sounding beast. The bass and lead are very similar, metal panel Super Lead can sometimes in comparison to the bass and the older circuitry sound a bit thin in my opinion.
