Sure been diggin the crunch and roar of my 2203X! Started with Marshall back in the mid-80s (Lead 12), and went through several before going to boutique stuff. No I'm back to Marshall and could not be happier. The only thing I find myself GASing for right now is MOAR MARSHALLS!!!

Just added a nice JCM900 1960A cab to the man cave yesterday. Used to have JCM900 1960A and 1960B cabs, but sold both in the last couple of years. Glad I got another! The T75-loaded slant cab sounds GREAT with the V30-loaded Line6 cab -- both plugged into the 2203X. A very nice pairing!

Which master volume amp gets you closest to that vintage, creamy plexi overdrive? I was looking at the vintage modern as well as the jcm 800 Reissue. Also saw the JVM, but it seems like that would be a better fit for heavy metal, hard rock stuff.

of those, i'd consider the VM. it's more versatile than the 800 and some here say it can nail some classic tones.

One of a kind Harry Straub "Hurdy Gurdy" 2X6L6 blackface style amp that goes into plexi territory with the boost toggle on. I currently have it up for sale/trade on some other forums, but am considering keeping it and having a local tech convert it over to EL34s so I can exploit more of its plexi soul.

I'll take a JVM over all others, and have owned all.
Vintage tone is there.

Agree, I've had a VM, a 1987x, a 2205, currently own a YJM100 and JVM410H. The JVM has one of the best master volumes you'll find in a production Marshall and gets great classic rock tones with the right settings. It's got too much gain on tap IMO, but learning to run the amp with lower than normal settings is what it takes to get the nice tones. Don't forget, most of the older amps don't have the modern features of the JVM, like MIDI capablity, digital reverb, series/parallel FX loops...

From your list the Vintage Modern does great classic Marshall, especially in LDR mode.
From my experience, the best is a MV late '70's to '81 JMP or an early '80s vertical input JCM800 (1983 last of the vertical inputs).

Yea a jcm/jmp seems to be the way to go..... However the VM's are significantly cheaper.

That's a '79? Thought I read somewhere that the serial number was put on the front as well as the back only in '80 & '81?

If I'm wrong I owe an apology to somebody.

Gorgeous amp regardless.

I am close to pulling the trigger on a 2203 jcm 800.

I want to get that classic Marshall roar at control-able volumes and it seems this is a good choice. The vintage modern seems to be hard to come by, is it being discontinued?

Also I was wondering, if you put the master volume all the way up on a 2203 does would it sound like a plexi just using the pre amp? I heard that the amp is very similar to a slp except with an extra gain stage in the pre amp section.
