Hi all,

My first post here since I joined this week. Many more to come I'm sure.

Would anyone know how or where I could find someone who does cabinet reconditioning / refinishing in or near upper NJ (Bergen County area)? I really want to avoid NYC at all costs. NY state (Rockland / Orange Ctys) OK.

I have a typical, non-unique, nothing-special mid 80s upper 4x12 cab that I bought used which is in dire need of proper refinishing. The non-original grille cloth is some weird brown color I've never seen and don't like, the white plastic Marshall emblem is the incorrect type and barely hanging on, and it's obviously been apart and messed with more than once. I'd at the least like a proper new face cloth installed with a correct and properly attached emblem. At the same time, I'm also looking to get the speakers replaced (a whole 'nuther endlessy tiring brain-spinner of decision that's draining the hell outta me.. Oh woe is me.. which ones to pick). Any additional services such as caulking, seaming, sealing, etc or whatever makes a cab better in the interest of performance would also be welcome. I would want speakers replaced as well at that time. I don't need it 'restored' to original or period-correct or anything like that. I just want a clean looking, properly presentable cab.

P.S. I took the back off and saw that it has 4 G12-75s rated at 16ohm.
G12T75 I think?.. Not 'H'. I took a pic but have it at home on my camera and don't remember. They're your typical mid-80s 75 issue speakers. All 4 work just fine and I'll take any fair price offer considering they are what they (just) are and I want to replace them with something different. Not looking for killer top-offer for them. Find the lowest price for them and offer me $20 below that. I don't care. I could always post a pic of the speakers should anyone request. No prob if anyone wants to come over and try them out. All questions welcome.

Thanks very much.

It might be a fun project to do yourself, get the materials and take a stab at it. What amp do you have? What kind of music do you play?

In my opinion, having done all you are doing...You are WAY ahead just parting out, or selling your complete cab, and finding one with the speakers you like.

REAL nice 1960AV with Vintage 30s, or even AX cabs with greenbacks are all over the place for $375 to $450 right now.

Your cab will cost a few hundred to recondition, unless you do it yourself, and you like doing it.

The cabs are essentially identical from the 80's to today, as far as build quality and materials.
You will get $175 to $200 for the speakers, and $200 for the cab....so you are already there..

My two cents

Thanks very much for the replies everyone.

Pedecamp - I normally wouldn't mind doing it myself but time isn't generous to me anymore with a wife, 2 very little ones, a mortgage, house maintenence, etc, etc, and more etc. The fact that I'm also recently unemployed and need to spend the time looking for work takes priority too.

Maybe I'll take Soundboy's advice and part it out. I paid $450 for the A cab with the 75s in it but it's not what I want so I'll once again take the stab in the a$$ and take what I can get for it whether whole or split up. If anyone wants either 4 75s or a slant cab with a dark brown fabric grille material (is that even correct?), let me know. I'm not looking for top dollar. I'll list it all with pics when I get a chance. The twist is that I'm just so f'n spent (both mentally and financially) from buying then selling and always losing $ that I just want to get rid of it because I can't take the aggravation (and lo$$) anymore. It's in fine shape. No issues with it. It's just not what I want.

JD - Thanks for that nice long list. I've searched everywhere on the internet and couldn't find 1/10th of what you listed. Maybe I've been looking in the wrong places (hey, sounds like a song..) but I've been looking forever and for the life of me I cannot understand why I can't just go out and buy a new, empty, standard full-size Marshall cab 'speaker-ready. It's so f'n frustrating. I don't get it. It doesn't make sense to me. What am I not understanding?
Let's see what happens now with joining the Marshall forum..
If one of them is anywhere near upper NJ, I might just see what it cost to get the fabric replaced since the cab is in fine shape. If not, I'll (hopefully) sell the whole thing and somehow, somewhere, some way, buy another cab.

As a side note, my main music interest isn't anything too crazy. More mainstream examples ranging anywhere from early Sabbath as well as any Sabbath with Dio to Testament, Slayer, Megadeth, Anthrax, early Pantera, early Maiden, that sort of stuff. Of course I'd do anything to bargain with Father Time for a quick trip back to the past when I saw bands like The Mob, 7 Seconds, Dead Kennedys, Bad Brains, Circle Jerks, Crumbsuckers, etc.

It seems though at this point I should head over to 'Community' and 'introduce myself'.

Thanks again all.

Are you sure about the grill cloth being non original?
Marshall came with a strange brown grill cloth during some years in the eighties.

Do a google search for Marshall 80's and you will see a whole bunch with that ugly grill cloth.

You know I think you're right. Just perusing the internet throughout this morning and I see that it actually isn't some oddball handyman home-made job like I first suspected right off the bat. It's a JCM 800 Lead 1960A 4x12 with s/n 27779 and based on various things I've been reading/seeing throughout this morning on the good ol' trusty web it seems to be all original (although the speakers themselves are questionable since the back has been off at least once and even though they're all G12T75s, they appear to be 2 diff types - in pairs - of G12T75s based on the visual appearance of the labels).

I going to post it for sale in a few minutes so pics of it can be seen.

Thanks.

Its called "faded after 35 years".
Another myth that pops up every other week.:D

I don't remember seeing brown in the catalogs or the stores on any 800 series gear, back in the day...
or since.

Oxford ish sorta...
No they were definitely black in '85 and early '86, but they faded to brown very quickly. I guess the supplier temporarily changed their dye, but quickly realised it wasn't very colour fast.
Doesn't happen on any other years that I have seen.

You know I think with all the stumbles and upsets along the way in the many years of just trying to find a cab that I'd be happy with, the frustration over time subconsciously made my mind remember the one I currently have to be much worse in condition than it really is. I pulled it out of the closet and other than the emblem not being mounted properly (hard to see in pic), it's in decent shape. Again, just not what I want. The back has been off at least once which is obvious due to the presence of a couple of incorrect screws but in very fair shape. I've attached a pic so you can see the funky brown cloth which I now believe is original (although whether it started life as black or dark brown I'm not sure).
At this point I'm willing to just take the hit and sell it dirt cheap just so I can move on with my search. I wonder if the lion or scarecrow would have any helpful words of wisdom for my dire situation. Oh Toto, please lead me down the path that is righteous..
