Any help with identifying this cab would be awesome. I haven’t played through it but once about 8 yrs ago with my 63 Bassman-as I recall it was healthy. Now that I have my Super Bass 100 maybe I should consider it. He’s out of state, so I can’t try it out!
He is a close friend, so no worries there.

100w cab with a 100w amp, you'll have to be cautious cranking that SB past 4-5 with the speakers. Do you have another 4x12 cab to match with it, or is this the only one you'll use with the SB head?

I have a ‘79 1960A with G12-65’s. I wish this were a B!

Cab looks very good to me. If the speakers are all known good and not knackered (or you have guarantee from reliable friend to take back if they are all flappy). A set of just broken in T1221s sound fantastic - a set of abused ones, even if original ones can be disappointing. All I would do is glue the flappy bits down and rewire with red/black twisted wire (18 swg) in original type loom (the red black sounds better don't you know!).

As Jim points out if you use your SB above 3 on the volume or goose it with pedals I would take care to use an attenuator. One click of -3 or -4dB will be all you need.

Wiring was redone. Caution is needed! For all you know there are repair jobs, recones, etc done, that can have a very big effect on the price. Also, you see big spills of liquid, better make sure that the cones weren't drained in this stuff. I would ask him to pull the speakers and send pictures. Maybe even ask for some video demonstration that there is no rub and that the glue on the spiders is still good. But it looks sure looks like a cool cab!

Pretty sure a 63 Bassman used a 4 ohm tap only. Hard to tell in the pics, but that cab may have been rewired to parallel wiring, and with four 16 ohm speakers, that would be a 4 ohm cab. Probably a good idea to check on that while you're at it. I have wiring diagrams for 4x12's, both series/parallel & parallel/series on my site at this link. http://www.scumbackspeakers.com/wire.html

A Bassman or SuperBass can easily blow those if pushed too hard, never dime it.

The worry with him pulling the speakers is some guys don’t know about sticky gaskets. Many a nice greenback are torn that way.

That is one of the last basketweave cabs, circa mid 71. Labels are not pre-rola, so they are likely April 71 or later. The 'DD' date code is most common in 71, very likely what you have there because Marshall switched to checkerboard grill around that time too.

Non original wiring, and damp staining on the grill and woodwork is a concern. Check bottom of the cab isn't rotten wood.

You should always check the speakers properly before paying high prices for cabs. Been saying it on here for years. If it's cheap enough then yes take a gamble on them. But if it's a high asking price, go over the speakers with a fine toothed comb. Certainly don't buy based on photos that only show the backs of the speakers. With cabs that look as though they have been damp you want to really make sure the glue is still holding at the spider support as that is the first thing that will rot on an old Celestion speaker that has been damp in my experience.

Then it's not your loss. Since its rewired surely they were pulled before

Excellent advice. When I played it, in a bedroom, it was set up at 8 ohms. All seemed to sound great though we didn’t crank it. It’s been parked in his closet for 20 yrs. He’s a Helix guy and only plays at church with his old Deluxe for backline. assuming I bring my head and listen to it, and do the exams on the speakers, does his price for me of $1500 sound reasonable?

meh, romanticizing the past is expensive hey?

Partly true. The fact is that if they are in 100% working order they will sound better than anything you can buy new.
I thought the grill was in good condition - just the usual beer stains from top to bottom, as opposed to cat pee at the bottom. The bottom of the cab looks dry and clean inside.
still Caveat emptor.

A Bassman should take 4 ohms, but I had a '67 that I routinely ran cranked at 8 ohms and it took it just fine. Also, as a 50 watt amp a Bassman is safe to crank through a cabinet like this.

FWIW, vintage gear doesn't really do it for me anymore unless you're buying it sort of as a collector piece. After discovering the quality of the clone market I've really been turned on to that, because of what great quality gear you can get from companies like Rockitt Retro, Granger, Germino, etc. on the used market for very reasonable prices.

Yes I am totally on my own with that everyone totally disagrees with me I am an idiot, old speakers are dreadful.
Now everyone send me their best Pulsonic coned speakers and I will send you some new Celestion Rockets.

Seriously though you are right. It is all opinions. I have mine based on my experience and my ears and you have yours. Wonder what others here think within their experience (not TGP votes:applause:)
