The only amps I cranked to 10 and thought it didn't sound worse then say 5 or 6 were the 1987x I had and a fender vibroking. Both sounded awesome at 10.
I haven't cranked my JVM passed 5 yet

8 is the spot. But 6 or 7 is more practical, and gives a bit more headroom for dynamics, and cleans up better.

If your amp muddies up after 5, then youre using too much bass.

I've tried my JCM 800 at all Master levels while playing the the preamp. To me, When its between 8-10, it gets that to that really crunchy, thick, slippery tone, playing wise. I do notice a difference when I get to 4 and above, but it still sounds kind of light. When I get the master between 8-10, it sounds a lot like "Fair Warning" and "WACF" where his tone was a little thicker and gainier.
