Do I need the metal plate under my 71 50W?

I just bought a small box head cabinet for my 71 50W. I'm moving it out of the big box into the small box and I'm too lazy to go out and find a metal sheet to put in there unless there is a good reason to do so?

Yes, you may find the amp squeals without it. It's to create a complete metal cage round the circuitry.
