I started late in life. Began at a Saab dealer. When we moved "up north" I worked primarily as a Toyota mechanic but also some used car work so a little of everything.
we all have a different threshold for these kind of things. I agree that if you can do it, and quickly, then why would you pay. Maybe they dont up sell becasee musicians are historicllay broke? It certainly takes me personally a lot longer than 10 minutes to do a simple setup. With respect to your prices for oil changes, I havent paid that little for an oil change for 30 years. Having said that, I used to do pretty much all my own car maintenance. You wouldnt be able to buy the oil for even for my old, simple car for the price youve suggsted let alone the filter and labour. For the BMW an oil service in a motoring chain is £100. The non dealer specialist is use is more. I think I live in the wrong area :-D
I used to pay but a luthier in my area who does billy corgan and Jeff tweety's guitars offered a class for 300$ to learn how to do a setup and redress the frets and included doing a redress in the class. He normally charged 400$ for the redress. Took class last summer and it was outstanding. Setup three electrics and did then neck on an old JS700 that brought it from being a painful reason of why I jumped to get a perfect PRS Out of frustration during college to being a great guitar again.just curious how many of you guys set up your own guitars? Or If you have a tech/shop do it, how much does it cost?
I've almost always set up my own guitars, I find it fairly easy and another way to get to interact/tinker with my gear. My local guitar shop is always busy with set ups, every time I go in, someone is either picking up or dropping off a guitar. They charge $75 for a set up and string change... Idk but that sound fcking crazy expensive! I can change my strings and do a decent set up in less than an hour give or take depending on needing to fine tune intonation and it really isn't that difficult at all. I mean it's like if you can change your own strings you posses the skills to fine tune and adjust the guitar.
I think it should be pretty mandatory for a guitarist to learn to set up his own guitar. You can spend years and years of dedication on learning the instrument but not take a few hours and some hands on experience to set it up yourself? I'm not judging anyone that doesn't do their own but I highly recommend it, plus you have the ability to experiment and find the perfect combo.
A set up can make or break a guitar.

I want it done right.
therefore, I take it to someone else
I do all my own setups, including Floyd Rose bridges. But I won't touch the electronics. I have a guy I trust to do that.just curious how many of you guys set up your own guitars? Or If you have a tech/shop do it, how much does it cost?

Yes, I wonder if the guys saying 70.00-75.00 is INSANE has ever owned a small business, paid a crew an average wage (about 20.00/hr.), actually met payroll on Friday -WITOUT FAIL-, paid health insurance., property and liability ins., workman’s comp ins. (mandatory on some cases), rent, electric, gas, water, and MANY other things. AND had the pleasure to lay in bed wide awake at 3:00am on the 14th of each month wondering where you’ll get the money to make the Federal Payroll Tax Deposit tomorrow! That famous 6.2% that’s withheld from your paycheck. Oh...and if you get to pay yourself, don’t forget your own 6.2% AND guess what! You have to match everyone’s 6.2% including your own. So..doing anything for 15.00-20.00 bucks ain’t “cuttin it”.we all have a different threshold for these kind of things. I agree that if you can do it, and quickly, then why would you pay.
