Play that by a crossroads and someone will come round talking about a deal.

Yeah, get a combo. They are generally cheaper than a head.

I don’t see a problem at all with a 4104. Heavy.. sure but who cares…. It sounds great and it looks great. Put it on a big wheeled dolly and go. My 2 sense.

I gigged a 4104 vertical input with G12-65’s for years. A great sounding amp and I barely ever used pedals.

I would hold out for a vertical input JMP or early JCM800 for around $2k. They are out there.

Would you pay 2k for a horizontal input or are the vert that much better?

I’ve Got a line on a horizontal ‘84 2204 but it has an after market headshell.

I would not. Mainly because, much after 1983-1984, JCM800’s had more gain and sounded less like its predecessor a JMP 2204 or 2203.

I’m mainly old-school when it comes to my amps and I really don’t play high gain (ZZ Top to Zeppelin).

I know there’s a slight difference in voltage in the horizontal but I thought they were almost identical circuits. Interesting.

The 4104 deal I was working on fell through unfortunately. But this 2204 head popped up. I’ll think it over. I have an itch I need scratched what can I say lol

I may be mistaken, I’m probably thinking of the 2205 and 2210 models and not 2204 and 2203 models.

Not an expert but yeah the 2204 is supposedly unchanged from the vertical. Although they’re supposedly a difference in voltages. And the later started using carbon film resistors vs carbon comp.

You think 2k is too much for a 2204?

Given these two, I'd go for the combo. Same amp, one is $1k less with 2 more speakers, and smaller and lighter to carry around. You can always use external/extension speakers later on. I have a 2203, but I'd strongly consider a combo if I had to do it all over again.

Re-positioned the volume knob? :naughty:

$2k is a reasonable deal either way… if original. Since the headshell was replaced, it’s not original and unknown what else is going on, so the “deal” may not be much of one.

Does HI/VI make a difference? Is/should VI be worth more?

Well the deal fell through again so nevermind! A sign I need to hold off for the right one.

I’ve watched that video. It is interesting.

You can't loose with the head or the combo - Both iconic amplifiers. I tried going the clone route (Ceriatone - Mojotone) always went back to a Marshall.

My '79 JMP 2204 idles at around 370V, whereas my '86 JCM800 (4210 combo, 1x12) idles at about 460. I had a 2x12 Marshall combo back in the day, and it was heavy as hell!

The other difference I know of is the horizontal inputs have the control pots (vol, treble, etc..) soldered directly to the circuit board, whereas the vert inputs have leads from the pots to the board.

Yep I want the real thing. I’m sure some clones sound great but I have an itch only a Marshall can scratch at the moment unfortunately lol

Same circuit except for the (I think this value) 2n2 on the mid pot. I remember really liking my old 4010, even though I tried a 2n2 on the mid pot of my ‘15 2203x, I thought the volume , mids and gain did a slight dip. I have 2 2204’s and would love to add a 4010….just not a fan of the 2x12 aspect of the 2x12 combo, I’d rather have a smaller 4010. Out of those, I’d choose a 2204 if I didn’t already have one. My &.02…..🤘🏼

Posing another situation…

An all original vertical 4104 for $1900 shipped

Or wait for a vertical 2204…

I’m leaning 4104. Every sample I’ve heard of these sounds great. Ideally I wanted a 2204 but I think I’m warming up to the idea of a 4104 with g12-65’s. An awesome sounding combo with the option of using with extension of needed.

Thoughts?

Whether you should wait or not it's entirely up to you, but this is a good deal on the 4104.
