I put these in an inflation calculator to understand since I wasn’t around in ‘83 but I could have an entire rig for less the price of an SV20 these days

Marshall 50w head, a 1986 for me, with inflation is $762.68

A 1960A going for $629.36

1392.04 before tax I’m assuming

If I wanted to be real frugal I’d buy a 1986 and a 2204. That’d be $1525.36

Add in a 1936 cab for $357.35. Bring it up to $1882.71

Still less than an SV20C

Picked this up recently in a 80's Marshall Brochure, I'd never heard of the 1940 cab before, I can't imagine they made many of them!

anyhow shows that the stuff was pretty reasonable priced back in 1983!View attachment 119629
Those prices cant possibly be real, I paid $400 for a Crate back then, surely I would have gone for a Marshall at those prices! Those must be vendor prices.

I agree that those prices seem insanely low, but it says retail price list. Wish I had a time machine!

Prices are in GBP btw, the prices have VAT added so that looks like its a retail list.

Still a 1959 in 1983 is almost half price of the current 1959 reissue (adjusted for inflation )

The average weekly wage in the UK was £150 a week in the early 80's so a head would set you back around 2 weeks wages, which I suppose still holds up!

The GBP was about $1.70, so multiply by 1.7 to get USD prices, except they were a lot more than that if you were buying in the US. Multiply the GBP retail by 2.5 and you are probably close.

Yeah. Beat me to it. A full stack was around $1200 (in St. Louis)back then. Way over what HS kid me, or even college kid me could afford. Though, it would have been an okay investment. Valve amps were kind of a voodoo mystery back then too. I did wind up with a Sunn so, I didn't do too badly. Glad I finally came around the a Marshall, even though I was around 50 when that happened.

I worked in a music shop in 1983 that sold Marshall. That is not even close to the USA dealer price.Double that then double that for retail.Marshall was whats known as an A mark.Full stacks were not 1200

In 1986, each piece of this JCM800 2205 Original Classic Limited Edition set cost me $750.00. 2 heads plus A & B cabs w/G12T-75s. Still have all 4 and they rip!! But that was a ton of cash for me back then.

Nice find. These are UK retail prices. I bought a 2203 with 1982 A and B for 565 pounds in April 1982 direct from the factory in Bletchley. At the time that was $1028. Such a deal... brought it back to the states and I still have it. Monster amp.

I bought a JCM 800 4210 combo from Whitmer McNease in Elkhart, IN for $599.00 in 1983. I remember it being expensive but I wanted a Marshall !

That's odd. I bought my Marshall JMP 50watt head new in 1977 from Reliable Music, Charlotte, NC for 666.99. It was easy to remember for obvious reasons. I still have it. I'm not sure those prices are legit. If Marshall issued that list, I would imagine they would have used their logo font. Could these be used amps?

750 bucks is over 2k today so I guess that price list must be for people who dealt with pounds vs dollars. That’s a lot of cash nowadays but a whole lot of amp to show for it after all these years

My used ‘81 2203 cost $650.00 in 1983. The two 1960B cabs were each $600.00. All had from Daddy’s Mass Ave. Boston. Not many JCM800’s around there, then.

I 'm always keeping my eyes peeled for odd little marshall bits, getting a signed letter from Jim Marshall dated 1987 this week thanking someone for filling out their registration card

I bet Shipping that rig wasn't cheap!
