As consumers become more comfortable with the process and the bugs get worked out of the systems, retail in general will become increasingly automated. Frankly, I'm all for it. If I can deliver a product to the consumer as effectively or more effectively at the same or lower operational cost, this is a no brainer.

With an increase in global population, why do companies think it's a good idea to reduce their workforce with machines? Well sure... it looks good to the CEO's wallet.

It's also good for McDonalds in terms of sales, as it's been shown that ordering on a touch screen by yourself versus ordering through a live person can result in an average bill increase of 30%. People will order that drink when it's offered to them or they feel nobody is looking. That apple pie they never notice on the menu? You can bet you'll see 'desserts' on the touch screen. They'll also never forget to up sell. It's just a matter of time before all of the food is prepared that way as well, and you'll only really need a host / hostess or two, and someone to keep the place clean (3 or 4 employees max).

I'm afraid so. Knocks out almost half of your staff.

Wages don't really matter. Robots are going to be cheaper and more efficient than humans. That's inevitable. Like the article I linked said- up to 45% of the work force may find their jobs threatened in the near future. It will start to affect middle class jobs too.

So what will that mean for the unemployment rate and the tax base?

At this point I buy whatever I possibly can online for the ease and convenience.

The near future will likely also see middle management jobs lost to "robots".
Usually we think of robots as good for mundane tasks only but evidently that's already changing.

SAPVoice: When Machines Replace Middle Management

I find middle and even upper management the biggest waste of time, money, oxygen and human life for the most part! All they do is create mundane tasks that sucks time away from the people trying to do their jobs with no benefit at all. They should not think, just sit in their offices and paly video games and
Watch porn but DONT THINK...

The untold cost of the under-living wage is that the health and social services that now must be provided by the public (us) cost half again as much as they would have, because we add two levels of bureaucracy to determine needs and assign providers/benefits.
