I'm using a 1960AV with my 2203x. It's a very bright cab, can be fatiguing to the ears. I've got a 1960AX on the way with Greenbacks to see if that helps.

Love the 1960AV w/my Mesa amps.
id like to know how they compare. i feel the same way about the v30’s
i have an Avatar 4x12 with Heritage G12m’s that i love! but not with the 2203?

The Blackbacks, named after the magnet cover colour(just like Greenbacks) were only made from about 75 to 78 and corresponded with the change from Pulsonic cones to Kurt Mueller cones.
So the GH30’s in the 1960AHW are a reissue of the 60’s Greenback
oh really? i’ll try it again. Maybe it was a distraction that led me to a quick judgement?

Most likely what he favoured in the UFO days, a stock 1987. Not sure what year, but probably a 70’s Metalpanel rather than a 60’s Plexi. Speakers were probably what was used by Marshall in 77/78 which would have been Blackbacks. Probably 25 watt but who knows.

Schenkers not using that much gain on Strangers In The Night. My stock 71 1987 does that by about 7 on the volume.
The rhythm guitarist/keyboardist Paul Raymond actually has a slightly thicker, gainier sound. I know he used a LP Junior judging by the live shots from those gigs and I’d assume he used the same amps.

1987 and greenbacks?
That’s what I use for late 60’s through to late 70’s classic rock and hard rock. The rig on the left, which is a stock 71 1987/68 straight cab with Pulsonic 25 watt Greenbacks.
The other rigs(70 Superbass/68 straight cab and 79 2203/77 slant) will do those sounds great too, but the 1987 is my fave. A little sweeter in the top end and controlled in the bottom end. Lots of midrange.

Please let us know how that matches up! I’ll be watching for that!

Honestly, I feel like my 2203 matches with a much wider array of speakers and cabs than the lead/bass spec amps I own or have owned. With the 4-holers I very much prefer GB style speakers and kinda don't like anything that strays too far from those (m25 being my favorites). But my 2203 sounds great with just about anything I pair with it. One of my favorites is a cream alnico, especially with my Telecasters.
Right now I'm bringing a 78 1960b cab back to life, it was in really bad shape but had original Blackbacks in it. Before I started surgery on the cab, I of course tried it with my 78 2203 and I gotta say, it's a solid match. Looking forward to completing the project and cranking it all up.

What kind of rock is the question that keeps popping into my mind. Eric Clapton? AC/DC? Judas Priest? Sabbath/DIO? U.D.O? I've got a single 4x12 loaded with older 20w Greenbacks and it pairs nicely with my 50w 2204 clone. A 2203 would eventually take 'em out. As it is I can push them into that "cone cry" region ( a place where Greenbacks sound supreme) They'll handle the harder heavy stuff just fine but I don't feel like they're as aggressive as the "Vintage 30s", which can handle twice the power. Actually more, I see they're now rated at 60 watts. Be careful though. My 50 watt head will measure almost 80 watts at full tilt. Your 100 might go to 140 if you're really dug in to it!

If you'll forgive a *totally* plastered person that used to play guitar and hadn't for a while ( but does again ) and got a new one with fret wires much taller than he's been used to, this is 4 20w Vintage Greenbacks. Glad I can play them again.... Added a bunch of colorful things to this build. Resonance control. PPIMV (along with the standard 2204 master vol, which is really cool cuz you can drive the heck out of the phase inverter, get that really "power tube overdrive" sound, and not rip your head off. Face it guys, these are class AB1 amps. Power tubes will NEVER draw grid current and the phase inverter will never deliver any)

Anyway, a drunken fool playing with vintage Greenbacks:

Wow. Did I suck!

Suckage!!!

More suckage

But that's around 70 watts into 4 vintage 20W Greenbacks
