Hi, Fellow Marshall lover!
I just pick up 1968 -1970 cab 1960A for $700
the tolex was removed and painted black. The grill cloth is basket-weave not a rip or tear but the previous owner painted it black. plywood back, metal handles and 2x4 brace. The 4 speakers are all pre Rola greenbacks. #1 is a G12H 102 014 cone. #2 is a G12H re-cone WF 1009 cone.
#3 is a G12M 102 014 cone. #4 is a G12M 102 003 cone. My first question is can I safely remove the paint from the grill cloth? should I remove the grill cloth and reverse it because the backside is still nice brown basket wave. I have read that the basket-weave grill is very thick and cuts out a lot of highs end frequencies. your thoughts will be greatly appreciated.
I will try and send pictures. website stating some pictures are to large

Thank you for the welcome.
I have a few more interesting Marshall cabs.
1933 1x12 to test each speaker. I only did the battery, ohm, and physical / visual inspection test.
I also own a 1965 a & B
plus a 1966B

I think at $700 you did quite well. The main downside is that WF 1009 cone, that if I recall is a Waldom. The only options are A) keep it that way (if it doesn't sound terrible), B) find a suitable replacement, or C) have Jim at @Scumback Speakers do a vintage style recone for you! "A" is the cheapest and "B" is likely the most pricey! Jim does fantastic work and is highly regarded!
Enjoy,
Gene

The WF1009 cone is a Waldom 75hz cone, while the WF1008 is the 55hz cone. They aren't good, which I know because some were used by Weber to build the blue frame Scumbacks in the mid 2000's. After hearing them I sent them back to be rebuilt with another cone. If they sound good to you, great.

Another vote against the Waldom recone. Yank that out and have it reconed with a Heritage Greenback reissue cone.
Waldoms are AWFUL sounding. I got a set of four '69 and '71 Greenbacks, all Waldom recones. and sent all four to Scumback for recone. They came out excellent. Tonally they're very close to my sole original Pulsonic coned T1221 Greenback.

The odds of doing a satisfactory job of cleaning paint off the grille cloth are pretty low. I personally wouldn't even worry about it,
given the overall state of the cabinet. I would repair, recover, and refurbish the cabinet to its original specifications and decide on the grill cloth after the rest has been redone. You may want to keep the original painted gril cloth, or you may want to replace it.

You can buy 80's and up cabs for $500 and less all day. Your 70's cab comes with "vintage" speakers but they will need attention, such as a re-cone or voice Coil or both. After that, it won't be original or "vintage". So what. Play it until it stops, new celestion speakers are $120 to 150 each. I think you paid a bit too much for the shape and age and the impending cost you will incur. Even a 70 to 90's amp is going to need $$$ to keep it working after you buy it.

Looks like a great fall project. This is not advice, but my style:
Take a bunch of pictures Take it all apart (not wood joints)
Clean parts, polish or repaint things like handles.
Replace any ratty wiring.
Soak the grill cloth in GooGone in a bucket, and agitate it a few times over a few days. Rinse, hit any areas with more goo gone, rinse heavily, dry it and iron it (no starch) scotch guard it while flat. Test and replace any speakers, leave the cab bare and play it a bit until you figure out what Tolex style you want to do. This part you don’t want to rush. Lastly, send pics

Depends how much effort you want to put into it. That cab is going to need some serious work if you want it to look close to original again. Personally I would sell it straight away as a 'restoration project' and move on. Check the speakers over, keep any good ones, sell any recones or faulty ones.

The problem with painted basketweave grills is the material can get completely clogged up with paint. So it's not just the appearance, it alters the sound too. Unless they have sparingly used a spray paint to do it.

I've seen pleximaster use a power washer to blast paint off the grill with fairly good results. Never done it myself though.

Thanks so much for your input guys. So far, I tested the G12H 014
cone in a 1x12 cab. it sounds great. then I tested the other G12H WF
1009 cone and it didn't sound that bad. I will post the results after testing the G12M's. I removed the grill cloth; it was in bad shape on the other side also smoke nicotine. I have two Marshall 1966B 2x12 cabs I was going to put the speakers in. I was thinking to sell the 1960A cab as a project for someone. but with a new basket wave grill cloth. Where can I buy the best replacement grill cloth? and fine threaded machine screw for the speakers & handles?
Maybe try and sand the cab down to bear wood help the sale. The cab was part of a half stack with a horizontal input' 2203 head.
the lady's deceased husband didn't want to sell separately.
I offer $500 first she said no. I drove an hour, so I didn't want to come home empty handed. $700 was too much? I always wanted those old green backs.

I do miss the tone of my old fully stock 1971 Super Lead 1959 I had back in the early 80's but it had to be so loud to get that tone. I used to have hide behind the boiler in my basement. I ran it through a Dean Markley 4x12 B cab. That Cab didn't sound bad at all.

I took apart the cab. there was 1 screw holding the baffle board in:facepalm:
I think I'm going to use it. I took the grill cloth off it was so dirty and tried the pressure washer trick. I knew that was going to be a big mistake! I ordered 32 of the 2BA x 1 speaker screws that I think Bygone Tones recommended on another forum.
I was going to order the aged basket weave from Mojo Tone
for $12.99 put it together and play it. I don't have a 4X12
and just miss the thunder they make. A friend gave me a 1969 Traynor YBA-1 that I just recapped & 3 pronged. I swear when cranked it up sounded just like a 4 hole Marshall JMP 1987.

My Grandmother used to say. What the Hell:)
I'm trying to downsize pic's. I will keep posting the progress and do a YouTube video on it. Here is a clip of me playing a 1966 2x12 with Celestion Vintage 30's made in China.

Help needed! Can someone tell me the correct Metal handle fasteners for my cab and where to obtain them? The cabinet I believe is from !968 -1970 due to the construction and speaker dates.
I recently purchased the speaker hold down fasteners 2BA X 1.5 that I need to cut down to 1 inch from British Fasteners. The cabinet came with only 6 Screws. 3 on each handle, but they have a Phillips head. Are these the correct type? They are also the same thread type as the 2BA x1 for the speakers. British Fasteners does not carry the Phillips type fastener.
Any help will greatly be appreciated.

I believe the handle screws are 2BA x 3/4" Pan Head Phillips drive.
