No, @Torren61
The main reason I asked was because of cost, a Randall 1/2 stack for the price of a
Marshall 4×12 cab.

It's a very good learning experience for me.
You guys know this shizz.
I asked, you guys helped, I had a few more questions, you guys answered.
I'll have some more questions before
The Holidays, but between now and then, I will be browsing the Forum and learning some things.

I didn't intend to sound malicious if that's how I came off. I remember when I started getting into guitars and amps more seriously and people would tell me things but I had a singular focus. It cost me money but I learned a lot of things. Most of us have been right where you are now. Although a lot of us have differing opinions, there is a core of experience that you are trying to tap into.

Most of us would agree with these statements:

100 watts is just too much amp for playing at home
Randall amps are not what WE would buy for our first amp
Tube amps sound better than solid state amps for most Rock and Roll applications
For learning and playing at home, low watt amps (5 to 20 watts) are just right
20 watts is LOUD enough for most small venues and can be mic'd through the house PA for larger venues

That doesn't make it a "works for everyone" statement. It's what I believe is the general consensus. Start a poll and list ten amps in your price range and pool the collective hive mind here and at TDPRI. See what you get.

Another vote for the DSL20 or Origin20 and a 2x12.

although with the current prices being inflated, those may be just a tad out of the OPs budget. Prob can find them used fairly easy.

Not at all !!

I hate that it's difficult at times to decipher content.

Sorry about that.
I was meaning to say in an agreed sarcasm
that NO I am NOT jumping to get Rolland.
Just that the pricing was so good at enticing someone like me.

I am So Thankful that you folks are interested in seeing someone through Ignorance to come out ahead with some sort of Knowledge.

Yes, and Thank You for that!
I have a DVD set that I am having a BLAST learning from, and I have
GuitarPro 7.5 that I have the playable lessons loaded into.
I can speed up, slow down, loop any section, enlarge or shrink the screen.

a great place to start. the one and only problem with on line lessons, there is nobody to hold you accountable
for your study or often lack there of. but yes, steve has a great way of teaching and explaining things that ive
not seen before. what standard teachers break down he breaks down even more. you cant set down to a steve lesson
and walk away still a bit confused. you just cant.

The DVDs I have, he ENCOURAGES getting together with other musicians and talking,
and meeting with players around the same level and have a jam regularly.
He can set up Skype time to help whenever we have issues we can't seem to get through.

[.ETA .]
He has a Forum that is VERY Helpful too.

I bought my 1st guitar with my 1st paycheck back in 1984.
FULLY INTENDED on going head first into it.
Hung around some friends that had bands, learned some 2 finger power chords, and slowly we all drifted apart.
That was 40 years ago.

Last year, I got the DVDs from Metal Method because I had seen his ads in the Music Store. I went with what sounded familiar.

So, in short, I am in my mid // late 50s.
Been doing the DVDs every chance I get, and talking to a friend that is in a couple bands. He helps a lot.
Its been just about 1 1/2 year now.
My work schedule is ducked up since the
C19 thing.

I thoroughly enjoy it. Kick my own ass quite a bit for not sticking with it.
I got involved with Muscle Cars, Drag Racing,
Beer, Girls, and such.

I am somewhat a perfectionist at some things.
I won't go to the next lesson until I get the current one down. I look at it, listen to it, but I won't proceed to go through it.

@Randall M. Laney

I meant no offense.
I was connecting your name Randall with the Company Name.

Dont worry about it! No offense taken, none whatsoever, just thought I’d chime in with my 2 cents, which are probably quite a different than most.

Cool coincidence about my name and this topic really - my 3 favorite amps are Randall Marshall and Laney, in no particular order, but I’ve played many a Fender, a Mesa Boogie once (the old kind,) a few Kustoms, and hell even a Behringer got the job done! lol

I even love the sound of the dubious Pignose ala Frank Zappa!

What I want to stress is POTENTIAL!

Do you want to play it safe? Do you want to be polite, play nice music that noone can hear or be bothered to hear?

Or do you want to go BALLS TO THE WALL? Rock and Roll? PUNK AS FUCK and METAL IN YOUR FACE?

If you say yes to any of these, or even at best a maybe-

Get the Randall solid state half stack! It will sound great at low and high volumes and push enough air as to move people, shake the windows and rattle the walls, and will stand up to a drummer and bass player.

You can play at 1-2 or crank it all the way up- why limit yourself? Playing a combo amp is nice, don’t get me wrong, its convenient and great for recording and playing in venues with great sound systems, but is that even a thing for you to consider right now?

Like I said a 4x12 moves air, its the closest thing to a religious experience a guitar player can have, outside of of a full stack and/or groupies. (No offense to the religious!)

Why limit yourself? Moving a half stack will put hair on your chest and vibrate the girls where it counts!
