So I picked up a Vox lil night train and am wondering since it uses a 12au7 as a power tube what would happen if it was switched with something like a 12ax7?
Would it go *poof* and die?

I wouldn't put a 12AX7 in there. That PT may not be able to handle it. Instead, look into the JJ12AU7 Gold Pin. And swap out those crappy preamp tubes. That should wake it up.

maybe a 12aT7.

if it worked it would add headroom i would think.

I own one too.

takes a retube and awhile to break int the speaker but, it's a killer little amp once it's awake:)

12AX7 will not work as an output tube.

JJ ECC82 (non gold pin) sounds killer as an output tube in my 12AU7 amp.
i like JJ's ECC83-S as far as new preamp tubes go.

\/everything below confirm with a tech before you try them!\/

i've read about guys swapping a 12AU7 for a 12BH7, or a 12AT7. not sure if
there is any biasing to do for those.

with the FireFly, guys have been re-biasing (changing a resistor) for a higher
power JJ ECC99 to get more headroom/volume. it's a new tube that puts out around 3W.
don't know if this tube would work in a Night Train or not.
