Which Years Did Marshall Use AlNiCo speakers?

*I posted in the vintage section because it’s a vintage question. But then again it’s also a cab and speaker question.* apologies if this is in the wrong place…

What years did Marshall use 12” AlNiCo guitar speakers? Were they used only prior to the the 4X12 cab came on the scene or were there 4X12’s sporting AlNiCo speakers.

Yes, they were used in the first 4x12s (genuine ones are now very collectible - "genuine" being the key word here!)

From when M first made them in '63 up to about early - mid '66, then the cabs were loaded with the new ceramic G12M20.

Nothing like the sound of a Plexi through a pair of Celestion alnico blues or Tony Tubby Chicago blues 12" speakers! It's just beautiful

Lots of alnico speakers were available up to the late 60s early 70s when a war in IIRC Zaire as it then was completely killed the availability of cobalt which is the co in alnico. Everyone shifted to ceramic mags but they never really retuned the cones to take out the extra harshness of ceramic. Guitar tone being what it was then no-one seemed to mind.
I love alnico speakers.
