Just like the title said. I'm playing for like 15 minutes or less, and the gain drops all of a sudden along with the volume, and doesn't return for like a half hour. Switched pre amp tubes V1-V3 around, and it does the same thing. What does anyone think it could be?
A couple of things about replacement tubes. I have a DSL 401 and actually plan on getting a Haze after trying it out. Something about the Haze that sounds more plexi and alive than the DSL (maybe it's the different power tubes).
My recommendation for tubes would be JJs in the power section and...
I was just trying the amp right now. Have it at low master volume (about 3). Doesn't seem to be doing what i said it does. Then again, I haven't fired it up in months. It's a JJ in V3 right now, by the way. Maybe this problem only persists when at high volume. I usually have it at about 6.
I actually have a JJ in V3. Unfortunately, I've already given my Mullard to my brother who just bought a Marshall head. I figured he has more use for it now. Interesting point you make though. I've actually been having an issue where on the clean channel, with full gain with no pedals, will...
I've heard this many times. The power tube sockets are, I call, tempermental. JJs power tubes sound good anyways. I was actually after some Mullard el84s, but Tubedepot said the same thing about the sockets
The 401 can shine when you do your own mods on them. I'm not fond of the OD channel though. It sounds very muddy past 6, even when you put a premium tube in V2. It gets REALLY hot, and I often worry about that. The classic channel is a pretty good copy cat of early Plexi Marshalls. I'm actually...
I have a DSL401, I like the same basic sound you like. I've tried many tubes, and I could say the best for our situation would be the Tung-Sol. It get's very close to the Marshall sound, has more natural higher gain than a JJ, and since it has such short plates, it's perfect of a Marshall combo...
Since it's a head, I'd recommend the new Mullards. By far my favorite new tube. JJs would make it sound more Fender like, and Tung Sols come close to the Marshall sound, but not quite. I've tried all of these in my Marshall, and the Mullard just had more of that classic Marshall sound.

...more expensive but well worth the money. They last longer, and have a more balanced sound than anything I've ever tried. They're perfect for classic rock and punk. I like to use the Power Slinkys when I'm short on cash. They're not bad...
