    Completed JohnH Attenuators?

Go for it! I built mine with average skills. I've never put together anything like this before. Took my time, step by step and bam... it's a beautiful thing. I'm loving mine, can't stop playing :)

    Completed JohnH Attenuators?

Here's my 100w, 16 ohm, JohnH Attenuator with -3.5dB/ -7dB switch. Design and layout on page 174 (post #3462) of "Simple Attenuators" thread.

Simple Attenuators - Design And Testing

Success! My JohnH works perfectly! I gave it a thorough testing yesterday and it sounds fantastic. There is no degradation of tone that I can perceive. I played it mostly at -7dB so I could crank up my amp (100w Marshall w/2 power tubes pulled + variac) and it never got hot, just warm. Also, I...

Thanks John, My build is 16 ohm with 1 switch, -3.5dB and -7dB. In the up position I'm getting 20.3 ohm and down position 18.8

Simple Attenuators - Design And Testing

Hello John and forum, I got a new fan installed and working. I'm all wired up, checked, double, triple checked. Everything looks good. How do I test it before connecting to my amp?

Simple Attenuators - Design And Testing

Thanks John. I don't have a 12v source, the fan may need that to operate. Oh well, it was cheap ($5). I ordered a new one and yes, I did check the polarity :)

I'm getting 9v on the jack so power is there. The fan doesn't spin with 9v battery so I guess the fan is dead... bummer.

John and forum, My lack of electrical knowledge is showing here... I need some help. My fan isn't working. Here are some pics of my fan, power supply and jack wiring. What am I doing wrong?

Simple Attenuators - Design And Testing

Hi John and forum, Here's an update on the progress of my build. Box and lid (base) are drilled out (except for coil mount hole) and resistors are attached.

Simple Attenuators - Design And Testing

Hi John, Would it be beneficial to spread the resistors out for heat dissipation? I would lose space for future expansion, but I could mount resistors on the side walls if I ever decide to add another stage.

Simple Attenuators - Design And Testing

John, another question for you. In your instructions you wrote, "you might overlap the tips and crimp the ends a little left and right so the lug holes line up but the resistor bodies are still in line". (see my drawing, resistors on right) Can I just offset the whole row of resistors by a...

Simple Attenuators - Design And Testing

John, a couple of questions regarding thermal paste. First of all, How much do I need for my 10 resistors? Is 10 grams enough? Also, how thick should I apply it and then how tight do I bolt down the resistors? Just enough for a little squeeze out or tight to the box? Thanks, andreas

Simple Attenuators - Design And Testing

John... Wow! That is absolutely amazing! You went above and beyond, You laid everything out so clearly and with nice instructions. Thank you! now I'm really excited. I'm going to order all my parts and get started on this. I'll post pics as I progress. Again, I can't thank you enough, really...

Simple Attenuators - Design And Testing

John, Thank you so much for helping me out with this. The BUD box does look to be to small, good thing I'm waiting on your ok :) Here's a 1590F Hammond that is 7.4" x 7.4" x 2.6". I'll look for one slightly bigger in case the 1590F isn't big enough.

Ok, I like your idea for mounting the fan and resistors. I found a BUD box, 6.5"x 5"x 3" should be deep enough, but is it big enough overall? Here's a sketch of jacks and switch.

Simple Attenuators - Design And Testing

Thank you John, This is great! and yes, you are right, I probably need a 16 Ohm version. I will always run the amp with the 2-tube/variac configuration. I love the squishy feel and lowered power. I think it should be 100W, just to be safe. I'm not sure exactly how much power my amp is putting...

Simple Attenuators - Design And Testing

Hello JohnH and fellow lovers of cranked amp tone. I've been reading this thread for some time now and I would like to build one of your attenuators. I have good workshop/soldering skills, but I fail the "entrance exam". I can't put together a circuit on a schematic alone, I need a picture...
