so , i have the bernie marsdens edition of the 1959HW amp and its matching 1936 cabinet. came from marshall as a matching set and loaded with two vintage 30s
i play this amp near dimed at all times (8-9) on the volume.
most times though a rivera rockcrusher attenautor.
this doesnt cause me any issues

HOWEVER, on occasions when i take the attenuator our of the loop and play it straight in to the cab. the speakers begin to smell like burning electronics. takes maybe five minutes.
i know this is the voice coil getting too hot so i stop.

marshall tech was no help with this

my question is, two V30s are about 120 watts of speakers. Marshall paired them with an amp that can smoke that number.

is it just too much to ask for those two speakers to handle a dimed superlead. to me this seems like the same issue as running 4 greenbacks in a half stack. that didnt work in the 60s and 70s and this is about the same thing.

my work around will likely be to run 2 - 2x12 cabs and see if that takes care of it.

1. has anyone found the limits on V30s?
2. has someone measure the produced wattage of a superlead set on about 9

thank you for any insight.

:welcome: to the forum.
Short answer is yes.
100w amps can exceed 100w output in certain circumstances.
Speaker power handling ratings are generally fairly conservative, but running a dimed Superlead into a pair of 60w speakers could easily exceed their capacity to dissipate that much energy.

Standby - smarter people will probably explain this in more detail.

Solid plan. :yesway:
More speakers, or higher rated speakers, are both solutions.

Where do you get to crank a 1959 unattenuated ?? My stock 70 Superbass puts out 140 watts at clipping, and at 8 where I usually run it, it would be even more. I should imagine a healthy 1959 would be much the same.
I use a Hotplate at -12db and through a quad of 68 Pulsonic G12M’s it’s still really loud. Can’t even imagine what it would be like to be in the same room with it unattenuated.

Just put the Rockcrusher on -3db and you’re effectively halving the wattage. Problem solved.

Hello fairlane67,

I can see that your cab can take 140W, but a 1959 can easily exceed 170W.

By Marshall's spec a 1959 is 170W at 10% distortion. (same as a 2203 and i had a 2203 and it was able to output at max 190W).

thank you guys for the input. i assumed what you guys were saying would be the case.
they only thing that i found odd was this was a matched set from Marshall. however, they probably figured what idiot will run it wide open. plus they only made 120 of them so warranty coverage would be next to nil.

i can say the amp is biased 68-70% and plate volatges are 500VDC on my 125VAC wall current.so is it healthy?i replaced the ruby electrolytics with F&T 50/50 and have had zero problems since. the ruby filters were the only parts that were of lower quality everything else in the amp seems good.
i also run two small rack fans in the back of the amp head to help cool the amp. she was getting hot running on 8+ for 1-2 hours into my attenuator.

yes, day to day the attenuator solves every problem. and most times i run with it producing about 92-95 db. the lowest usable setting.

from time to time it is just impressive to run the amp fully open.
i just got a second 2x12 set up for it. (not a 1936, still looking for another one of those). i put 2 WGS greenbacks in this cab and this corrected my problem. so this gives me 2 V30s and 2 greenback style speakers. also the ability to voice the amp a little different (the V30s give it a little more modern tone, the GBs more vintage)

Where do i play such a thing?
in my house, in eastern KY. no HOA, no neighbor hoods really. i help my neighbors whenever they need it and they put up with me when im being an idiot.
My dB meter swing between 120-123. not sure how accurate it is but it is an actual dB meter. And yeah its loud, very , very loud

thank you all for the input

You should also consider a pair of redbacks since each speaker is rated 150 watts... It might be safe to crank it without blowing them up....
