1978 Jmp 50 Watt Combo

My buddy is looking at maybe buying this. I assume its a JMP. Anyone know anything about them? Thoughts?

It is a JMP 2204 - that is a very good price depending on speakers [my late 78 had blackbacks]. Pretty clean looking as well I'd jump on it if I was in that area and didn't already have one.

1978 Marshall 2104 JMP MKII 2x12 Combo. Well worth the price if it's not been messed with and in overall good shape. Those vintage fawn tolex models are pretty rare I think.

I've owned two of these. That's a great price if it hasn't been monkeyed with. Yes, the fawn covered ones are a little more uncommon. Would be good to know what speakers are in it - as noted, should be either Marshall branded black back Celestions, the later 70's and early 80's ones often had G12-65's. Straight up rock machines. All the goodness of JMP master volume amps. Crazy heavy though. Good luck to your friend.

Those vintage fawn tolex models are pretty rare I think.

I'd say it's been re tolexed, all the can furnishings look new, ie- handle vent grill and corner guards, I've been wrong before lol

Why is everyone hating on any mods on a JMP? My 78 has been messed with, well before it became mine, and the mods are so unique, and actually compliments the power, and I wouldn't have it any other way personally, though I understand purists wants for OG condition, or for resale, but if you own one of these, you will never want to part with it!

The (mostly) sad fact is that these were just gear, like a coily cable or a MXR pedal for a long time and “necessity” or creativity dictated modification, whether a home job cooling fan in back or a questionable gain mod… all the way to pedigreed and legendary amp techs turning these into sunset strip superstars.

It’s like watching a ChiPs marathon and cringing over a good $2.8 million in classic Mopar, Shelbys and Trans Ams being lit up and destroyed because they were cheap old cars. THEN it didn’t matter, and to that end, we cut (some of) those old end users some slack.

NOW however, is no longer THEN. MOST of the great utilitarian mods can be matched or beaten externally by new accessories. X series Marshall amps can be had new/used to molest as well as kit clones. What you cannot EVER get is a 1968 NMV or 1978 MV made the exactly way they were made then. Regarding the current crop of amps, there is no reason to irreversibly modify a proper-functioning classic, and there is every reason to discount and lowball the molested ones since its originality dips down to that of an X or clone… with holes in it.

A great price, and even better if has not been modded and has original sneakers. The Fawn color also adds value.

Totally understand, if I had one untouched, it would stay OG, just that the mod on mine is awesome, it has a 4th preamp valve, another master volume and preamp dual, and a foot switch , so I can set my amp signal paths different ways , and have a next level distortion, that is balls to the wall! If I have an Aby pedal running into both inputs, I can basically have 4 channels to select from at my feet. It's definitely not a common or hack job mod!

Hi Dom, its a 2187 model which is the 1987 chassis in a combo.
