Hi!
With all the hype on the AFD-100 I am also thinking of getting this amp.
I have some questions, the answers to which will help me decide: :naughty:
1. Is there a UYI-100 amp around the corner?
2. Was UYI album recorded using a #34? (A modded JCM800, which is what a AFD-100 tries to be)
3. Are the tones of the Slash amp (JCM2555SL) built into the AFD-100?
4. After all, a AFD-100 is a modded JCM800 - right?
5. Are the AFD-100 tones achievable on the JVM410H?
:hmm:
Thanks!

1) If by 'around the corner' you mean in the unforseeable future, sure.
2-4) meh
5) You could get those tones on the JVM. It's versatile enough. But as we have all come to appreciate here: Tone is in the Fingers. Or in the case of Adwex, our dear Moderator: Tone is in the Hat.

What is "meh"

I swear that the Appitite amp was NOT a modded 800. I mean I'm sure there is an 800 on there, and an old boogie, and many other things, but the #39 amp that was rented was a 1959 trem, not 800 MkII

1. It's already built into the AFD100 (the #34 mode)
2. Yep
3. not exactly
4. Yes (the original amp was a Super Trem but they built the AFD100 around a JCM 800 as apparently the JCM800 was designed using the schematics of a Super Trem as a starting point).
5. Dunno - probably

I have an AFD100 and can tell you that it's a great sounding amp. In my opinion it's not versatile in the least (good cleans are not possible etc) but it does one particular sound very well. If you want a rock sound with boosted mids and balls then it's great.

The way the most current version of the story goes is that #39 (a rental from S.I.R.) was a modded Marshall 100w super tremolo, 1959T. T was for tremolo, and an extra pre-amp tube was used for that purpose. The mod disabled the tremolo and used the extra tube for added gain. However, the high in demand #39 was supposedly used for rehearsals but not available when AFD was recorded. To help meet customer demand, #36 was created. #36 used the same principal, an extra tube for more gain, but the 4th tube had to be added to it, next to the other 3 pre-amp tubes - like the #39, it was a 100w pre-master volume head. So, #36 was used to record AFD. The end result is that both amps achived the same tone. #36 always had the mod on, but #39's could be turned off. Apparantly Slash never knew that #36 was swapped out for #39 for the recording session.

Complete story: http://www.slashsworld.com/equipment/amps/the-appetite-amp-story/

The last time I read this article was a while ago, and I don't recall #34 being mentioned, but if my memory serves me correctly, I think I read somewhere that it had less gain than the #36 and #39. That makes sense to include it on the AFD 100 in order to have another tone available on this great amp.

Comments from Santiago at the AFD100 website, in response to the above questions:

by Santiago @ slash07,
1-YEs
2-No
3-No
4-Yes, which in turn was originally a modded 1959T to 800 specs
5-Similar but not the same
hmmm so there's a UYI amp also coming next, and #34 was NOT in use for the UYI recordings, NOR does it encompass 2555SL tone territory
Hope this clears things up :cool2:

Thank you Santiago for replying to my questions, and Wish You a Great New Year 2011!
Is it possible for you to give an idea of when the UYI-100 amp will be released, and what the key features would be? :hmm:

nope... your questions in the AFD page were in different order:
1. Was UYI album recorded using a #34? (which is in the AFD-100).
2. Is there a UYI-100 amp around the corner? If 1. is yes, what would be different on the UYI-100 amp? Is there a need for it at all?
3. Are the tones of the Slash amp (JCM2555SL) built into the AFD-100?
4. The AFD-100 is a modded JCM800 - right?
5. Are the AFD-100 tones achievable on the JVM410H?

I just read Santiagos answer on the afd100 site and looks like you have the wrong answers slash07.

There is no plan at all for an UYI amp... as you point, you can get the UYI tone in the #34 mode of the AFD100

I had to doublecheck your post since I have been waiting for my AFD100 for months.
