Rrright, because a JVM is a sweet, silent purring kitten, with no hiss whatsoever, no crappy board layout and pretty much everything NOT PCB mounted? [/sarcasm]

You must have had some faulty ones, because both my InVader and Ironball (and previously my Savage 60) have less hiss than most other high gain amps. And I've played Diezel, Bogner, VHT, Soldano, Peavey (ever heard a 5150 I in standby? Like a friggin' gas-leakage!)

Diezel (Herbert, not the VH-4) is comparably quiet, Soldano (SLO100, Avenger, Hot Rod 50) and VHT hiss slightly more (but Soldano has a more open gain structure to begin with), and Bogner I can hardly remember.

Mesa MK IV is legit as hell, Soldano SLO-100 is not to be trifled with either. Last but not least Bogner Ecstacy.

Those are the High end Amps that actually lived up to the hype IMO and are AWESOME.

To hell with Dumble, Carol ann, Category-whatever and the like.

The Cores for me are:

Fender
Marshall
Vox
Roland JC-120
Mesa/Boogie
Hiwatt

Everything else was an offshoot of sorts, or added feature sets (channel switching, etc...)

The amps normally plugged into my rig are:

Fender Super Reverb (Bastardized Head)
Mesa/Boogie MKIII Coliseum Simul-Class Head
Marshall SLP (Cameron modded)
Cameron Atomica

I like:

The Egnater MOD series: (MOD50, MOD100, M4 Preamp), TOL100
Diezel (Herbert, is the one I like best of Peter's line)
Bogner: (Uberschall, Classic, 101B, Shiva) ALL great amps
Fuchs (Overdrive Supreme, Triple Drive Supreme)
/13
Soldano SLO100, X88R Preamp
Suhr PT-100
Friedman (KILLER gear)
Mojave Ampworks
Custom Audio Electronics 3+ preamp

Didn't know anyone else who was even aware of the Egnater TOL 100!!!! I have one, and it's REALLY effing sweet!

Well I wouldn't even entertain the idea of a JVM.

Actually it was a Savage and a 100W Straight I'd messed about with. Quite liked the sounds but wasn't impressed build-wise, or hiss-wise. Too much gain for me in any case, they're all wasted on me.

I just don't care for all these newfangled ones they carry @ GC...

I like Laney, Hiwatt, Ampeg, Blackstar. I haven't tried Engl.

Not a Mesa, Fender fan...

Can't say I've really tried out a lot of amps that seem to get mentioned around here.

Obviously every brand has their quality line vs their economy lines.

This is probably my most used amp for convenient good tone at manageable volume. It's perfect in the clean setting with the MV & Gain up around noon, guitar > MIJ SD-1 (set clean) > Valvecaster > amp. I run the Echo part & Hall of Fame in the loop. Lately I'm digging the Vox setting but I change it up every now and then.

I'm a vintage amp junky so the rest of the amps in my sig get fired up a lot too.

Only Marshall! I just don't get a sound I'm 100% happy with out of any other manufacturers amps. And I've had a lot.

Randall RM100 & V2
Mesa Triple Rec
Mark 4 & 5
5150 1 & 2
Krank Revolution
Egnater Armageddon
Orange Rockerverb & Thunderverb
Everyone of them sold but my Marshalls stay around.

Well, like you said, the amount of gain is usually the root cause of hiss, and then the only fair comparison with a Marshall is the JVM, that has similar amounts of gain, and that hisses like a mofo!
I mean, a Fender Twin Reverb hisses less than a Plexi, but is that a fair comparison?
Anyway, I recommend you to test an Engl Invader; less of that insane gain that some other Engls seem to have and more classic (dare I say, Marshall-y) voiced. That was also my issue with the Diezel VH-4 on Channel 4; too damn much gain to make a decent sound at.
By the way, I don't care much for the Invader's channel 4, so if I were to do it over, I might have gotten the Steve Morse sig (basically Ch1, 2 and 3 of the Invader, with more control on Ch3, 2 low-mids and 2 high-mids (switchable), but that wasn't available yet when I got my Invader.

Straight-up Marshall clones are not an option, so don't say Metro/Ceriatone/etc.

For me I think it would be Orange. Judging by my Micro Terror they've got great British crunch, lots of gain without sacrificing tone on lower gain settings, and great dynamics (doesn't feel compressed). It's also a dead ringer for early Sabbath. I'd love to play a "real" Orange sometime and see how they compare, but I am certainly quite pleased with the Micro Terror.

How about you? What do you like as a second amp after Marshall?

Personally I wouldn't touch a Marshall. Because it's an overkill amp.
Just like ALL the Rock chords are used up.I hear all these guitar guys
and they all sound the same.Tone doesn't make for a song or for
melody.I think it's a British invasion.I am in search for something new.
ALL these guitar freaks know is what they hear from other guitar
freaks.Gee ... like I need More " Tone ".Gotta have me some more tone.
What if the Beatles thought like that.Or Elvis.
Even Bruce Springstein { I was the first guy in my area to play
Springstein LP's }. Also Elvis Costello.
I hear all these guitar guys and ALL they seem to understand is what
other guitar guys play, and say and want.
Talk about overkill.
It's like a herd of elephants used in Circus.
I mean, like the Elephant is about the most wonderful of animals,
but used ad nauseaum, and Jumbo all seem the same.
There are no more cutting edge guitarist or songsters or movements.
So why on earth are so many aspiring guitarists so preoccupied in
certain amps and guitar and " Tone ".
I think it a form of Musical chairs.
Be that as it may ... why not then go for the best.
Whatever that means ?

Therein again. All that Gear makes you a better guitar person.?
I wonder if Elvis thought that.Or Eric Clapton or Jeff Beck.
Of course they did.But Clapton and Beck peaked around the time
of " Layla ". So explain all this Guitar/Amp/footpedal nonsense to
me.It's just a phase. Actually it's Retarded.
Like a young basketball player insisting they need THE best leather
basketball available and THE Best sneakers and The Best basketball
hoop in order to be noticed.Which even a grade schooler should know
from their parents is rife with contradiction.
I hope future politicans don't adopt this nouveau trend of merely
purchasing things in order to sustain a note of authority.

Yes I see my 60's Silvertone amp there.Which at the time I felt was WAY
TOO Tremolo. In fact at the time I didn't like.It was an annoyance.
maybe some day they'll make an amp with a computer that matches
incorrect chords with correct chords and simulated rehearsed Eric
Clapton-like guitar leads.I mean,that's basically what Y'all are striving
for.Tell Me true Tammy.
