I'd like to have a variac on hand for vintage gear and experimentation. Can anyone recommend something good, perhaps off Amazon?

I have a Powerstat 3PN136B, a full 15 amp rated unit, it'll serve power to anything that runs on 15 amp rated residential power circuits. Highly recommended, if you can find one at a good price. There's really nothing better.

It would depend on where you are, they are heavy so freight will be costly.
The best bet is finding a local to you one that is second hand, I have two and one I can barely lift by myself since it is rated at 0-260V output at 15 Amps.
What are you going to use it for ?
10 watt amps or 500 watt amps ?

Weight goes up with power handling so it would matter if your taking it out. 500 VA will handle any single amp. Larger for multiple amps at home. My non- branded Chinatown unit is working fine
