Anyone here have a custom built instrument? Who built it?

Are you pleased with it or would you suggest someone else??

Thinking about having one made at some point.

I made my own guitar(s) at a course run by a music college in Leeds, England.

Yr1 project was a Music Man Stingray bass.
Yr2 was whatever you wanted to make.

So I made a set neck copy of my then Charvel Model 4 HSS.
I made it a HH instead and changed the electronics.

Had to sell the Charvel to afford the parts though.
Miss that guitar, but mine does make up for it.

I am not taking any orders though!
It was 30 years ago, and I haven't picked up a router since.

An updated version or modded version of the Yamaha sx series from the '70's. Otherwise known as "devil's head" guitars.

They were only available in Japan and most had single coils. Eastwood made a copy of it about five or six years ago...but it also had single coils.

If you're ok with a specific set of options that a builder offers then Kiesel is amazing, They offered everything I wanted short of a personally designed body shape. Super happy with my custom build from them. Very fair prices too!

IMO, custom built guitar makers have a different relationship with their buyers.

These custom builders are concerned with the needs of their users.

They communicate with them.

Their guitars have little, if any, value in the used market.

You buy and it's with you forever or get some drastic insulting opinion of a resale.

The superior build means nothing.

I have a relationship with EVH's former luthier.

I bought his guitar that was to go to Billy Gibbons but went to me.

Here it is:

It's not everyone.

Teye once called me when I was on the road.

He picked my brain.

Here's the Teye:

James Trussart did the same.

My Trussart guitars:

So did Pawar.

My Pawar one Turn of The Century:

Rob Mondell (Justin Sain ) guitars told me that he'll introduce me to The Black Crows.

Again, if you buy their gear, you are married to it.

I’ve built a few of my own, learning something new each time. Right now I’m in a phase where I like to build neck thru 24 fret guitars on a fender scale.

I’m not super awesome at it or anything, and to a certain extent, it seems that I’m just fixing one mistake after another until I end up with a finished guitar, however in spite of all of that, It’s very satisfying to play something that sounds awesome and know that I built it.

It also changes my perception significantly as to what I’m willing to spend on a guitar when I know what kind of sound I can build. I’m a one trick pony for that though, normally mahogany and maple combos, sometimes I use sappelle instead of maple, and always Indian rosewood for the fretboard.

Dean Gatewood is fantastic. He will make it exactly how you want it. His attention to detail is incredible. If I were ready to have a custom built guitar, I would choose Dean every time, hands down. I would guess he is very inexpensive since the last time I was in there, he did a setup and he threw in a fret re-crowning and only charged me $40 or $60. I can't remember which. He's a really nice guy too. https://www.deangatewoodguitars.com/

Doug Kauer builds some gorgeous incredibly well playing instruments—I have this and another ATM, prob will own at least one more. Lightweight, substantial neck carves and beautiful:
