Hey guys I'll start off by saying I'm fairly new to tube amps...

I bought a used DSL 100H online from guitar center about 2 months ago. I didn't know when I bought it that the power tubes were replaced with JJ El34's. It sounds nothing like the the stock dsl that I played at GC. The cleans sound almost muffled. Hard to explain. Just not what I thought I was buying. I've looked online and I can't find the stock tubes anywhere. So I guess my question would be how can I find those tubes? what are they called? What's the closest thing to those tubes ?

Oh Canada
could be that a bias adjustment is required.
i believe most would say winged c for the power tubes.

EL34 and ECC83 are stock, so maybe just a different brand is making it sound different? Or the bias is off as mentioned above.

My 2014 DSL 100H came with;

Pre Tubes
1 x 90067 (V1) - ECC83S JJ Low Microphony Red Logo
3 x 00055 (V2-4) - 12AX7B/ECC83 Shuguang No Selection White logo

Power Tubes
4 x 00042 - EL34B Shuguang Gold Logo (with Tube Amp Doctor "S2" stickers on them)

I am using RUBY 12AX7AC5 HG+ for V1 (not a fan of JJ) http://www.dougstubes.com/ruby-12ax7-ac5-high-grade-1.html
and a RUBY 7025SS HG for V2 (these are seriously great V2 tubes) http://www.dougstubes.com/ruby-7025-ss-hg.html

I totally forgot to mention that I attempted to check the bias when I got the amp. Not sure if it was that I didn't know what I was doing (which is very likely) but the reading that I got was really odd. Everybody I saw on forums and videos said that it should read around 88. 44 on both sides. When i did it, it said like .12 ???

And I matched up the tubes to these (VLVE-00042 EL34B Shuguang Gold Logo ) is there a difference between el34 and el34b ?

Yes well, I did not mention any pricing nor did I say I would be buying any more.

By the way, AES about $230 for matched quad. Tubestore about $240.

Sometimes decent used sets can be had for a lot less.

As you pointed out there are now tubes that are just as good and suitable for less.

Make sure your multimeter is set to 200 vdc, on a DSL100 you'll be checking one pair of power tubes at a time. Also don't forget if you raise one side the other side drops so check both sides back and forth until you get your desired reading on both sides as close as possible (I'd go with 38 mA each side), it doesn't have to be perfect either as long as its within a couple mA of each other. If you need new tubes get a set of Shuguang, that will probably get you closest tonally to what you played in the store.

Nah, it is a DSL100H. That would be more like 88mA/mV per side using the bias test points, not 44. It would be about 44 for each tube but there are two tubes per side.

If reading .12 on a meter it could have indicated 120mV on that side being much too hot for two power tubes in this amplifier.
