umm.... nice job on the grill cloth ,, but,, if your 800 combo is an 85 or 86 then the cloth wasn't faded, they made some 800's in 85/86 with the brown grills,, actually its pretty rare to find cabs/heads/combos with the light brown grills,, and if it isnt an 85/86 then it did fade to a perfect resemblance of said shade of brown. Although its very doubtful. If you were able to get the old grill off unharmed I would certainly hang on to it in case of ever selling your amp. just sayin.
this is my 85 800 stack , that took me many years to find locally.
Rolandj00, hey there!
Before I started the grillcloth job, I was told about the "rare" brown cloth. But upon closer inspection on the backside of the soundboard and under the logo, the cloth is indeed faded black. The date on the chassis sticker is late 1985.
Yes sir, it would appear as though it had faded from black, both of my cabs have the same black area imprinted behind the logos,, which I have never looked at until just now and I am certain both grills are original. But being that I believe the brown grills to be a factory color from only 85/86 as I mentioned before and the fact that 85/86 solid state 800 heads/combos as well as the tube version of 800's also had said color grills.,,, It does seem almost impossible that they all had sun fade to the exact light brown shade/color from black...Or.. was a certain grill cloth produced/used that faded to this color over time? Did anyone here buy/see a new one in 85/86 or so that can chime in to confirm either theory? I believe it to be a factory color. But I may be misinformed?? Thanks for the pics and info 'Gazer'.
I researched my theory and found out for sure that If your combo is an 85 the brown/tan grill cloth was original, cause no other cabs/heads/combos other than 85's and early 86 have it. So faded or factory ( most marshall guru's said it was a certain batch of cloth that did fade, and all to the point of that exact color regardless of sun exposure,, Awesome!) doesn't matter cause they all classify as a single year production, Marshall anomaly. So again your 800 combo looks killer with its new face,,, but be sure to hang on to that brown one bro.
