New choke and p/t for my 50 watt clone. Tried the one wire mod but didnt like it so I un-one wire modded it.
I would leave it as is , as I like the mod you describe with the gain . Marshall's have to have a decent amount of volume to hit that sweet spot . My at home rig is 2 - 2555X's and 2 - 2551AV cabs , and I run both volumes between 5-7 and the sound is massive and glorious all for my own shits and giggles .I have a 1972 Super Lead (and it's a "Rosemary!") The seller told me it has the "Rich Mod." I know of this mod via the internet chatter. But here is how my particular mod works:
The 4 inputs have been modified so that only the top left high input works. Volume 1 knob is overall volume and Volume 2 knob is "gain" So in that respect, it works just like a regular master volume amp.
The problem is, to get the tone I like, I need to turn both volume knobs to around 7, which is insanely loud! If you crank the gain and keep the overall volume low (i.e. "bedroom" volume) the sound is thin and unsuable. SO, I am wondering if I should just have the amp returned to bone stock, if I have to crank it anyway?
My only hesitation - I don't know how much this mod is attributing to the overall tone of the amp, which I really like. I would hate to de-mod it only to learn I liked it better before.
As a they shouldn't be,Jim Marshall design those amplifiersTo be that way for reason. The best mod you can do to your marshall Is use a different pedal or a different speaker in front of it and leave the damn amplifier alone. Because when it's all screwed upAnd the technician gets it to Fix-it has to undo all the mods it's going to cost you dummys a boat load of money. LOL. There is a good video on YouTubeOf Angus Youngs Guitar rig,And the only thing he does differentIs runThe amplifiersOff a high end AC Power supplyThat sends a constant voltageTo the amplifier,I think it's 234 VAC.Which is a tad bit hot And they have a full time technician backstage RepairingAmplifiersAt every show.He runs nine heads at once And every few days one is going to blow upAnd the tech will fix itAnd get it back in the rotation.
I bought it from his estate when they auctioned off a ton of his stuff. There's a thread on here somewhere about it. Seach Dio's 2203 and it should come up.Dang! How did you get that opportunity!??
I installed the Hotmod V2 in V2-position of my JMP1987 from 1969. What a gain and tone and it´easy to remove.
Is there sound clips?!I bought it from his estate when they auctioned off a ton of his stuff. There's a thread on here somewhere about it. Seach Dio's 2203 and it should come up.
