I have a 1972 Super Lead (and it's a "Rosemary!") The seller told me it has the "Rich Mod." I know of this mod via the internet chatter. But here is how my particular mod works:

The 4 inputs have been modified so that only the top left high input works. Volume 1 knob is overall volume and Volume 2 knob is "gain" So in that respect, it works just like a regular master volume amp.

The problem is, to get the tone I like, I need to turn both volume knobs to around 7, which is insanely loud! If you crank the gain and keep the overall volume low (i.e. "bedroom" volume) the sound is thin and unsuable. SO, I am wondering if I should just have the amp returned to bone stock, if I have to crank it anyway?

My only hesitation - I don't know how much this mod is attributing to the overall tone of the amp, which I really like. I would hate to de-mod it only to learn I liked it better before.
I would leave it as is , as I like the mod you describe with the gain . Marshall's have to have a decent amount of volume to hit that sweet spot . My at home rig is 2 - 2555X's and 2 - 2551AV cabs , and I run both volumes between 5-7 and the sound is massive and glorious all for my own shits and giggles .

As a they shouldn't be,Jim Marshall design those amplifiersTo be that way for reason. The best mod you can do to your marshall Is use a different pedal or a different speaker in front of it and leave the damn amplifier alone. Because when it's all screwed upAnd the technician gets it to Fix-it has to undo all the mods it's going to cost you dummys a boat load of money. LOL. There is a good video on YouTubeOf Angus Youngs Guitar rig,And the only thing he does differentIs runThe amplifiersOff a high end AC Power supplyThat sends a constant voltageTo the amplifier,I think it's 234 VAC.Which is a tad bit hot And they have a full time technician backstage RepairingAmplifiersAt every show.He runs nine heads at once And every few days one is going to blow upAnd the tech will fix itAnd get it back in the rotation.

According to that video, if it's the same one, the tech explains that Angus was running 100w super leads with master volumes installed. I never knew he did that.

After modding other amps, I decided to take another approach.

I got a simple one channel amp (JCM800 Studio series head & matching cab) to cover my base sound, and anything else required comes from external components.

For me at least, I find this easier, and if I decide I don't like it, it's easily changeable (and most certainly cheaper)

I have a 2007 JVM410H. It sounded very good stock, but the sound had a few holes in it. The mods I added were very basic: Negative Feedback Mod, 1 MegPot/Stock resistor, 1uf/R97 Mod, 100K on R128 Mod. I did a few preamp tube rolls for polish. But it’s biggest difference although not a mod was taking out the JJEL34’s and installing The Preferred Series EL34’s and biasing them a little hot at 81mv at a plate voltage of 457volts. The amp is spot on for all modes.

My touring amps for the metal band, the 2203's and 2204's have the Zero Loss FX loops installed and are stock other than that. I sometimes substitute them for 4100 and 4500's which are stock. I use 1959's and 1987's also which have very minor mods. My touring amps will have the loops installed but my home amps will not. I also swap the giant 320uF cathode bypass cap on the Normal Channel for something more usable like a 1uF and I will include the option to cascade the gain stages via a push pull pot. This requires a treble bleed cap across a plate resistor to keep the amp from oscillating but it doesn't affect the tone when not used. I also put a second push pull pot to reduce the signal slightly before the PI. Basically it's what would be a pre phase master volume but I hand select the value for each amp. I just reduce the signal enough so that the PI isn't completely overdriven and mushy so that there is still a lot of definition in the notes. I do have master volumes on these amps but I use them in place of the voltage selector in the back of the amp so that the face looks stock. I'm not a fan of mods that require drilling holes all over the chassis. The masters are Lar/Mar PPIMV

I installed the Hotmod V2 in V2-position of my JMP1987 from 1969. What a gain and tone and it´s easy to remove.

I’ve considered buying one of these. Glad to hear you like it.
