    NAD: 1970 Marshall JMP 1917 PA 20

Roll some preamp tubes if you've got 'em. V1 at least.

    Perfecting the Lead 12

I know this is a year old, but I have to ask; any chance the impedance mis-match would hurt the little OT in these guys? I know usually up is ok but down is bad.

Marshall DSL 40 vs Marshall Origin 20 Combo

Hello! The DSL 40CR is the tits. The circut is different than the DSL 40C. I've run it with a well broken in V30 and a Weber G12H clone. Preamp tube rolling, especially in the V1 hole, can be rewarding. I found the factory V type speaker too bright. I didn't take the time to break it in. I...

Marshall 2555SL Half Stack - Wanted This Since 1996!

I bought a quad of cryo'd =C='s cheap years ago and they are the balls. Bias is key. I run them in a JCM 2K DSL50 and DSL40CR and I can get everything from that throaty giant kazoo with a midrange knob to Dual Showman with the right P tubes and bias in both amps. They sing.

    Suggestions for 10" greenback

I bought a vin 10 for a PRRI, and it does do a good job of getting a V30 sound. Prob a little more hi-mids than a GB10 but you can eq that to some degree. I wound up putting the factory "jensen" 10 back in after modding the tone stack and neg feedback on the PRRI, and it sounds good with the...

    NMD: DSL40C Vintage

I spent a lot of time rolling tubes, biasing and speaker change-outs trying to get a "C" to sound like a first release DSL50 I was running through a 1960A cab loaded with old V30's and Greenbacks. I had given up, but heard about the newer "CR" model that had a reworked circuit, and consensus on...

How do you increase headroom in a 50w JMP?

As others have already mentioned tubes, both pre, power and bias, the last remaining contributors to your signal chain are pickups and speakers. High output pickups will help drive your preamp section into distortion. Speaker sensitivity around 100+ will make your amp sound louder. look for...

How do I set up my DSL 20 on the Green Channel for Clean for Pedals (Gain,Vol,Treble,Middle,Bass,Presence,Resonance)?

Hello; I would get several 12ax7's, like a Tungsol or Mullard reissues, or even a JJ or 2, and replace V1 with each, and turn your knobs until you find one that gives you a nice clean, yet growls on overdrive. An aggressively voiced V1 might be ok if you don't want nice cleans. Your amp tone...

Do you use the guitar tone control?

Absolutely. I rarely go above 8 on my bridge pups, but neck sometimes 10. It depends on the tune. I play mostly covers and try to achieve a reasonable facsimile of the tone therein. I run my DSL'S with the treble and presence on 1, and have my top end and chime come from the way I have my power...

    Hendrix’s Marshall Settings

I have seen that before...soft bias 6550's = a little more Fendery cleans and early compression. I'm sure he ran everything as loud as possible before run away, and tweaked his vol as a compressor to effect. He used his fuzz-face the same way. You can hear him doing both on his recordings, live...

    Hendrix’s Marshall Settings

I ordered an Alder strat body from Warmoth With a "left handed" bridge pickup rout, major difference. He also used very light wound strings so they would not boom with the bass turned up to get as fat a tone as possible on the high strings, and were more evenly balanced with the hi in output.

    School Me on Marshall

I have spent many hours rolling tubes in the afore mentioned amps. It's really quite amazing how you can tweak the tonal characteristics of both the preamp and output sections and their contribution to the overall sound. Back in the day, spec's were adhered to as best as could be. Things were...

The Official Marshall Dsl40cr Information Thread

I spent some time rolling tubes in the loop, and it matters what's in there as far as both the tone and volume, ymmv of course. Also the pedals and order going in. I haven't tried any "rack" level output gear in it though. It also seemed to me that it affected the overall tone somewhat, on or...

The Official Marshall Dsl40cr Information Thread

That would be most illuminating. I just got through rolling tubes and the final recipe with the Weber C123055 that I bought for the "other" 40C, is quite close to what I run in my 2kDSL50 head. The bright cap tweak would be the cherry. Y'all still have snow on the ground up there?

The Official Marshall Dsl40cr Information Thread

Hey Micky! I've been looking for channel bright cap I.D. on the new 40CR, and was wondering if you might have knowledge on this.

    Dsl40cr Recommendations

Yes, compare them at least. Maybe Micky knows. I liked around 200pf for c19, and I think 68pf for c4. So we're stuck with speaker and tube changes/bias 'till someone in the know pipes in. But it sounded good out of the box, surprisingly. Bounce, bloom....just a little too much high end.

    Dsl40cr Mods

Has anyone ID'd the channel bright caps on the new DSL40cr, or seen a schematic? I had a 40C, and went through an exhaustive exercise trying to get it to sound close to a 2kDSL50 head I have which kills. Couldn't get there. I saw the new DSL's were different than the originals, so I went to my...

    Dsl40cr Recommendations

Hey MD; So the "bright cap" component numbers are the same for the new DSL's too? There should be one for each channel I'm thinking.

DSL 401 buzzy sound - help needed!

AMS! I've got my 401 chassis out of the box for some final tweaks and was wondering if you'd share the 2 cap numbers that you swapped for the 50uf's. My soldering is not the neatest and I dread trashing this board every time I plug in the iron. Thx.

DSL 401 buzzy sound - help needed!

Not really surprised, disappointed would be more like it. I recently went through a rectifier tube sag, power tube bias exercise with a Deluxe Reveb Re-issue. Yet another door opens. Yea, I looked at the schematic after your previous post, and saw all those caps you mentioned going straight to...
