Because instead of innovating or making something people actually want, they are just changing the paint on an existing product, jacking up the price and creating false scarcity to drain the back accounts of nostalgic suckers.
That good enough for ya?
The modded NF and missing bright cap will definitely have an effect on the tone... as will that replaced transformer. A LOT of the sound of these amps, comes from those old Drakes. Sadly a lot of time bad techs swap out transformers when that isn't even the issue.
I'm also not sure of those...
I built myself a simple combo amp cabinet with built-in power and amp switching capabilities.
Designed in SketchUp, and built our of high quality birch plywood, stained and poly. Really saves a lot of space in my tiny studio!
Wow, I can't believe how much goldtop prices have gone up! I had to go look it up. I bought my LP standard 50s goldtop in 2020 for $1,975!
I also saw that the price for my 2019 SG Special has gone from $1,199 (I paid $999 OTD) to $1,599!
I've had a lot of amps, but my '67 Deluxe Reverb and my '76 JMP 2203 are far and away my favorites. They are not going anywhere... in fact I am on the hunt for a Fender tweed... then I might stop. Maybe.
There is the Squier Classic Vibe Strat that has a fat u-shaped neck, as well as the Telecaster of the same line. Both are pretty cool and relatively affordable guitars. I believe there is also a Mexican-made vintage style strat and tele (Road Worn series?) that have fat necks. If you can find...
I think this 2204 is priced a bit high as well... and in addition to that, you will almost certainly need to take the amp to a tech for at least an evaluation, if not repair. These amps were played hard, often abused and hacked up. Many sellers are misrepresenting the condition of their amps to...
The other thing that no one has mentioned is that even a 20 watt amp is LOUD. Like 100+ db loud. Even at 5 watts, if you are sitting close to the speaker you could damage your hearing if you crank it up.
Master volume amps were not designed for using in a bedroom for practice or with your...
I have the UA OX which I use both as an attenuator and a digital input to my DAW from 3 amps. A '76 Marshall JMP 2203, a '67 Fender Deluxe Reverb and a newish VOX AC-15. I also use a KHE Amp/Cab switcher that has the OX in a loop. Works great and is very efficient for going through different...
I too was born in 1966, and consider myself a child of the 70s and 80s.... for me the classic Marshall tone has always been the JCM800. Even the guys I played in rock bands with in high school had that amp. Being older and more savvy now, I do love the sound of a 1959 too. A couple of years ago...
Just remember power conditioners are NOT voltage regulators. They are only there to smooth out the "bumps" in the line voltage, remove any RF interference in the power and stop surges above a certain threshold.
But older amplifiers from the 80s and older were designed and built for line...
Hey Bobby, I will give you a few ideas that several techs have mentioned to me...
The really bad hum is caused by a ground issue... now when you have a cable plugged into a high gain amp that is turned up very loud, the bare end of the cable is ungrounded, and because of that the cable is...
When I bought my '76 JMP 2203 a couple of years ago, it already had the bright cap(s) removed as well as several gain mods. It did sound pretty good, but not really as it should have for what it is. IMO was too gainy, overcompressed and modern sounding.
Earlier this year I had my tech take the...
Congrats on the new LP!
Yeah that's a satin nitro finish, it should age nicely, and that red will fade over time some... but not as bad as the original bursts. I have a 2019 LP Standard 50s gold top that weighs a ton but sounds and plays beautifully. I see that the Tribute's are chambered... do...
