I love thick tone, almost cello like. Duane's tone nails that, as does Eddie's from the first two or three Van Halen records. But even more than those thick tones, I love Dickey's tone. To me, it was perfection.
I was going to post the studio version of this one, but I have read Duane and Dickey were using a Fender (maybe Super Reverb) in the studio, so I will post a live (Marshall) version.
Either way, I love it:

All great answers here...but I think this album and EVH in general really made me start to pay attention to tone.
Yeah same here. I was into guitar at that point with Zep, Purple, Lizzy, Kiss etc, but hearing the guitar on that VH album started me thinking about the actual tone as much as the playing. He had such an amazing sound and it made me realise that many of my other guitar heroes of the era seemed to view guitar tone on studio albums as abit of an afterthought.

I can approximate a Dicky tone with my LP/2204 low input but amp dimed. Still pretty clean but sings. Bloody loud though lol. Similar setup but less volume with a TS9 for less ear damage works too.
This is great idea to get thst tone . Did he use the low input ?

Malcolm’s opening chords on Night Prowler.
Dan Hawkins opening riff on Black Shuck.
Eddie’s open G chord on the intro to Mean Street.
Blackmore’s neck pickup tone on Made In Japan.

I didn't go thru all the pages, but the best tone i have heard is from John McLaughlin's Marshall!
I don't know model or any such details, just the tone!!

I think vanhalen's 1st and gun's N’ Roses “use your illusion”.

By the way, I can't watch Micheal R/T's videos these days. Is something happening?

Dan Hawkins FTW! Permission to Land has all my favorite Marshall tones.

The Royal Albert Hall shows were Hiwatts.
Yes, and the quoted video was from that show. ;)

Apparently, during that era, (August 1969 to November 1971) Page was primarily using Hiwatt heads. He then switched to using Marshalls for their live shows from '72 on...
