Finally did it! Found a 1982 4010 combo so I bought it! Has a small tear in the grill sadly but no rust or anything on the iron. Has a couple Svetlana EL34 and an Ei smooth long in PI. I left it there. LOUD!!! Holy fuckin C, I need to get an attenuator just to control the volume. G12-65 speaker. MMmmm mmmm good. I think I might try a DR. Z Air Brake, I don't wanna get crazy here and I figured it would sound better at say 4 with the brake than 1.5 without.
Some quick snaps. Just rebiased. Dude took it to a tech friend. Bias was like 25 mV. Sigh...now it's around 36. 455PV.

Sweet. My combo was the 4112 , 212 version Great tone. But like the Bluesbreaker, Was just too heavy for me to get around. Bought both thinking they would be an option to stop hooking up trailer. After lifting into a pickup just one time each, along with limited space, I sold them, And went back to the trailer. Did some recordings with the 4112. Great tone. IMO the last really good sounding amps for Marshall were the JCM 800's.

Played a 2210 head here in Seattle a year or so ago. Did the "Michael Schenker" setting with the treble barely cracked. Awesome tone! I think about doing a 2205 frequently myself. ENJOY!!!

No thread is too old in regards to 4010’s. I have a 82 4010 and it’s absolutely phenomenal. I have the original G12m-65 but honestly preferred a greenback in it. Mine is a USA 6550 model and I just retubed it recently. I thought it sounded great before now it’s phenomenal. Here’s some technical stuff for those with one.

My 4010 runs at 392v when I checked it to retube it the other day. It also had a 120kohm bias range resistor and it couldn’t get very high on the bias. I figured after a decade maybe it’s time to change that so I swapped a 150k resistor in place and set the bias at 65%. That made it sound like a new amp. Nice, dynamic, warm, and full. Amazing.

Some other information is this amp is exactly the same as a 2204 except for a capacitor on the mid pot. I have a 81 2204 and have compared every single part. My 2204 runs at 400v with the same transformers. That capacitor does seem to make the circuit sound a little darker and less high mids I think.

Either way these amps are a 2204 in a box. Great small portable amp and can run a pair of 412’s all night long when the need for some power arises. Quite possibly the loudest 112 I’ve ever heard. I’ll never part with mine.

I always open 4010 threads regardless of age. I've been looking for one locally for years without any luck. Would love to have a 1x12 2204 voiced amp. I do have a 4104 which is really heavy to gig with. Put an overdrive in front and it really does not get any better. I have many other amps but my 4104 and 2204 are at the top of the list...all others fall secondary to it.

What brand 6550 did you use? I have an 83 that is a 6550 model. Thanks.

I used Tung Sol 6550’s and have RCA long grey plate 12ax7’s in the pre amp section. Funny thing is I had tubed it with tung sol 6550’s about 10yrs ago and there was no depreciation in output power and low end between the old set compared to the new set. I had a lot of time on those tubes over the years.

How does your JCM800 compare to your other amps tone-wise? What are your thoughts on it today?
Haven't used it lots lately, it hums bad, needs a cap job. At some point I will look at that.
It has that raw midrangey 800 growl that makes it sound even louder than it is. That is why I will enjoy the new SC20H because I can get it up in 5 watt mode and not have stuff dallmoff the shelves upstairs!

While you can get similar tones with some channels on some of the other amps, I am not one to "chase 800 tones" with my other amps. I set 'em how I like them to sound for each channel and play. It's nice to have a variety!
