The new DSL range can do the higher gain tones you might be seeking.
But they tend to compress and get mushy on the Ultra channels after about 7-8.
To get thrashy high gain tones I keep the Ultra gain at 7 and use an OD in front of the preamp.

Another alternative would be one of the JVM series.
They can do insane gain with no help at all, but are noisier (in my limited experience).

The DSL40CR and an OD is the winner for me.
