What model is the one with 65s?

JCM800 cabs. BUT, JCM800 cabs also came with G12M70's and G12T75's. The rear label will read different wattage handling which can help in deducing which speakers are in a cabinet but the only surefire way to know is to open it up and look.

G12-65's can be a bit harsh. Something like Splawn Small Block 65s are warmer.

If you are going to get them, get the Heritage version, they are smoother.

Really? I found it VERY MUCH the other way around. My originals aren't bright and harsh at all. If anything I find them a little rolled off.

Beware of the label markings!
I have seen ALOT of older Marshall cabs with the wrong labels.
I have an JCM800 cab labeled 260W...with four G12-T75:s, all original.
I also have a JCM800 cab labeled 280W...with four G12-65:s, all original.
My buddy have a JCM800 cab labeled 260W...with four G12-M70:s, all original.
On the other hand I have a few that actually has the correct figures on the labels
and luckily the impedance markings seems to be more accurate than the powerhandling
figures.
So to be sure you will have to open it up and double check.

Yup, I have one, labeled 280W and there are G12t-75's (1984)in it. I bought it in 1989 from the original owner, who claimed that he bought it new like that.

Hehe... yep, don't believe the badge on those older cabs, especially during the transition years. I have a couple of early/pre JCM 800 cabs that have 120W badges, but have original G12-80s (giving 320W handling). The good thing, though, is that I've never seen the impedance mislabelled (assuming the original speakers are in the cab).

Cheers!

+1 I have seen 1936 cabs (both top and side handle versions) with a 130 watt label on them but loaded with G12T-75s.

His cabinet is a 1982, not a 1960. Both models can sport the JCM 800 tag. Most 1982's had the G12H series speakers but some had the G12-65's as his does. None had the 70's or 75's.

Late 70's/early 80's 1982 cabinets have the round silver sticker and many say "120 watts" even if the have they G12-65's or the G12H-80's like my 1982A has.

Your advice to open it is spot on; I thought my speakers were G12H-30's based on the sticker, but when I cracked it open and checked the codes they are G12H-80's.

I had a JCM800 cab with the 65s in it....at the time I didn't realize how great they were and I sold it when I moved to N'ville. Hold on to that one dude.....they are great sounding...some people claim the best of the Celestions...

I'm a fan of the 65's.. I'm also looking into scumbacks... Tough choice when the time comes. I put a screw in my back panel center just the other day.
I was also considering sealing the interior seams of the cab baffle and the handle to wood gaps. I had done that with a 425A cab I had a couple years ago. It really made a positive difference.
