My JVM410C sounded great. The speakers were perfect for this amp and the versatility made it an excellent combo.
I should never parted with it, but I had 3 JVM's at the time and liked the ease of use of the JVM heads sitting on top of a cab. And the knobs are laid out opposite on the heads compared to the combo-which makes it confusing especially on stage under pressure situations.

My favorite combos, in order of preference:

4104
4001
4203
Class 5

But, depending on the situation, the order could change at any given time!

My two favorites are my (sold) 1983 JCM800 4104 and my 1981 2204 JMP.
I would love to test a Bluesbreaker tho...

For versatility my TSL 122, 3 channels of tube goodness. For tone and partly just because of what it is, my 87 silver jubilee 2558 is likely my favorite. Wish the tsl was a single 12 to save my back!

I generally don't care for Marshall combos, to me the ideal Marshall gain tone has that woody thump that comes from a closed back cab. Have owned a JMP 2104 (a beast, in a good way) an Artist 4203, Class 5, and a DSL 401. All solid amps with some good points and some challenges. Now, Fender combos, that's a whole different conversation...

Same here. I love Marshall tones in a closed cabinet. If I was in the market for a combo I would not look at Marshall combo's. If I had to choose within the Marshall family I would get the JMP 2104 or the Bluesbreaker.

:) I have to agree. It probably requires the least amount of pedals to get it to equal the sound of a JMD1, of all the other Marshalls.

I don't play combos much, but when I do, I choose my JTM 1x15. It has the most unique sound of any combo that I have.

I use to own a Marshall ValveState 8080V (80W) combo that I purchased way back in around 1990 or so and I had it until 2006 when I traded it up for a Fender Twin-Reverb. I don't regret the Twin-Reverb, but I sure do miss that ValveState terribly.:( It's a rockin' amplifier and it was my main sound for over 15 years. The versatility in tone was quite exceptional. I could basically play any style of music through this amp. I still remember the burning smell of the amp when I first cranked it like it was yesterday.

A good old thread. Time for a summary, as voted above out of 29 Marshall combo amps, counting 1 for a clear choice and 1/2 for an either/or:

In 3rd place, with 3 votes, the mighty 6101

In 2nd placd, with 3 1/2 votes, the classic Bluesbreaker

And in 1st place....
.....the greatest Marshall combo as currently voted by the Marshall forum
.....with 4 votes..
the DSL401!!

how'd that happen?

Mind you, if you aggregate the various models in the same series, the JCM 800's probably have it.
