strings that feel too stiff and rigid

H Hi, in my experience you just can't compensate the feel of heavy strings adjusting the settings of the guitar. I tune to drop C, short scale (Gibson flying V) and .011 is the gauge I feel the best. It doesn't respond too well up the neck, say like .010, but holds the tuning and sounds thick...

    JCM 2000 DSL100 Reverb Replace

Hi doc22car. It can be repaired, I did it on a friend's 2000. The reverb is completely analog, mechanical I would say, and inspecting it you can mostly tell what went wrong. I recall that a spring went loose, so I took a guitar string, weld it to the transducer, wrap it to the reverb spring, and...

    New Git prob solved!

Many times I discovered my Gotoh bridges beeing curved down, mostly I guess because of heavy palm muting. When that occurs, I put them face down, between two pieces of wood holding their extremes, and tap them down to straight shape using a little piece of wood and a hammer. It works perfectly...

    How old school are YOU?

Definitely me. I never ever liked pedalboards of any kind. Just a Polytune and a good old Excalibur cable, which I splitted to insert the tuner. For me, the best tone and feel is always there: guitar & amp.

8008 Valvestate solid state amp with distorted output

Hi. I have one of those 8008 since the 90s, and can tell you that it definetely has enough power to drive one or two Marshall cabs with 75s very LOUD, no issues there. It sounds pretty well, a little mid heavy compared to an all tube power amp, but VERY clear and detailed. The smoke could have...

    Need to install bias adjustment

Was the Marshall originally 110 VAC? Did you modify it to 220VAC, setting the two primary parallel windings of the power transformer in series?

Pulling two output tubes on a 100 watt DSL

Hi. No, the output must be connected to a DOUBLE impedance when pulling two tubes out. Also is right that you have to re check the heater voltage, because it can rise above the safe zone. If you have a typical Marshall 16 Ohm cab, do the following: use the head 8 Ohm output and connect it to the...

going through a rough patch as a guitarist

Gibson Marshall Guy47: I'm 67; been playing/singing since 12; been in all kind of bands and, since the 80s, in metal bands as a singer, four of them, but leave all of them frustrated...! Now, for the last ten or so years, I started my own power trio as a guitarist, in which I make the songs, the...

    JCM 2000 TSL100?

Definitely. I fix one myself. They can be repaired, but it takes a lot of work.

    Clip on Tuners?

One thing to keep an eye on is that many of them alter the sound of the guitar, mainly adding capacitance. The one which I can say it doesn't do that, is the Polytune. Of course, I'm talking about the ones you plug before the amp. Also rack units do that.

Today I decided to take a break from much needed guitar lessons

Hi. I can tell you that the only person who can really teach you, is yourself. I have a close friend who is an extraordinary guitarist in all aspects, and he really wants to teach me his knowledge... but I can barely follow him, because he's so gifted.... Now, can I play guitar? Sure I can, but...

    Valvestate 80V 8080 PCB Search

Hi. Can you post pictures of what you called "badly burnt board"? Sometimes you can reconstruct the faulty circuit traces with copper wire and a lot of patience. Even the epoxy board can be repaired sometimes. If the amp is iimportant to you, maybe it can justify the work.

Clipping diodes vs boost pedals for hot rodded marshall

Ope "Operational Amplifier". A lineal IC, which can be used in a lot of different ways, also for audio.

    DSL mods

Hi. A very simple but effective way of getting more gain and a somewhat open and brighter tone, is adding the "NF" cap in the 4th gain stage (check the attached file). I did it on mine, adding a 4.7uF electrolytic. It changes the feel of the amp, more fluid, and the green channel also gets...

Clipping diodes vs boost pedals for hot rodded marshall

Hi all ! I made a lot of DIY amps using the same power source (circa 440 VDC) and speaker tranny from the good old '70s days, all 50 Watt, dual EL34s; among them a Chupa, a Yeti, SLO (only lead channel), an a couple Marshalls, DSL, SLX, 2204, etc. The Yeti, SLO and the 2204 were the ones I liked...

JMP 2203 Pot Values - Low

Hi. Is a very common thing that pots have less than the advertised value. If the sound of your amp is OK, keep 'em.
